Granted, a bit unusual for a cruise-related forum.....
Mrs. S and I are planning a couple of fly then drive vacations this year. While we have OnStar in our car, we won't have our car at these locations we plan on visiting. We plan on renting one.
Rather than try and use a map, we thought getting a GPS unit would be the best option. We could use it in the car as well as while we were walking around.
Does anyone have any experience with GPS units, and if so, any thoughts or recommendations on what we should get? We do not now have (nor are we planning to get) a Smartphone where you can have that capability, so that is off the table as an option.
I have looked at a lot of reviews, as well as on Amazon, and truth be told, no one single unit seems to stand out above the rest. I do not want to spend a zillion dollars, and we do want a large screen.
I would stick with a GPS from a major manufacturer of GPS systems. i.e. Garmin, Lowrance etc. The main reason is that they keep their information more up to date.
Also a larger screen is better than a smaller screen. Voice directions are also nice but it personally drives me nuts but my wife likes it.
It is a hard decision.
I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1490 for my wife. It had a larger screen and she found it easy to use.
It all comes down to the detail of their maps and how updated they are and how easy it is to update them. If you have a bad map in the system then it's worthless unless you can navigate by coordinates.

I'll never forget the time we were returning to East Tennessee from Indianapolis. My Niece DeAnna kept telling me we should be heading South, how come the Garmin didn't send us that way?
I told her, "Now c'mon' DeAnna, these things are satellite controlled, it knows the best way!
And then I saw the sign, "Welcome to The State of Pennsylvania."
That is a TRUE story.

If your renting a car , check if the rental company has a GPS for rent.
Most consumer units are only updated every 4 to 6 months.
The units that the rental companies use are almost updated weekly or at least monthly. They also have local information added to there units.
The cost is about $10 USD + tax per day .

Kind of a side note, but something I've noticed with my smart phone GPS software ... I feel portrait mode is much better than the traditional landscape that most stand alone rectangular shaped GPS use. Why do I care what's going on way off to either side of me? Things further ahead are more important I think. Sure maybe if I am somewhere "local" where I might be making lots of turns the wide angle is better, but at least in a smart phone GPS, I can turn it sideways and it changes orientation. More standalone units should consider this option.

We are on our second Tom Tom, which Jim named Sue Sue, because it's a girls voice.
Jim loves it, and we take it when we travel. I hate it. Not it, but the fact that Jim has lost all sense of adventure. I love to travel, and see a sign that sounds interesting, and getting off to explore, but Jim no longer enjoys doing things unless Sue Sue is telling us what to do.
True story. We were in Daytona last year for a couple of days. I wanted to go to St Augustine because I had not been since I was a child.
We got in the car, and Jim got out Sue Sue. I told him it was not necessary, that it was a straight shot, but he continued to mess with it. Turn it on, let it warm up, program it, etc. I told him I would just go back up to the room until he got through playing with his toy. He opened the window and threw it out of the car.:o Now we never fight, and have learned to disagree without a fuss, but this was so out of the norm.
We both looked at each other, and started laughing.
He got out, picked it up, wiped it off, and we left. Me, Him, and Sue Sue. Sure enough she told us to turn left.
She has taken us, not to the resturant, but to church, and she is forever telling us to turn, when it's to soon.
I have learned to roll my eyes, and count my blessings. It could be much worse. He could be obsessed with a hooker, and wanting to take her wherever we went.
