Default Very old picture

This picture was taken from a video. I used a video long before I went to still pictures. I have many of them. So I inserted this video in the player and watched it til I saw this one. I paused it and took a still picture of the TV pix. The quality is not very good but I think you can tell where it might be. so tell us the City and Country we were in.

I have another picture following this one. It is from the same place but different.

We were in Carthage, Tunisia. These were the old Roman ruins.

I thought it was a clip from the pilot of the PBS series "Travels with Ray and Helen".

It wasn't picked up because Rick Steves can be ruthless.

Take care,
Mike

Well, now, one of my favorite duties is to be able to give the Orders of Architecture lecture in the Fellowcraft degree of Freemasonry. In that lecture we explain that all that is great, beautiful and distinct in architecture was invented by the Greeks, not the Romans! The picture is a bit hard to make out detail in, but I think that column is of the Corinthian order, with acanthus leaves decorating the chapiter.

Carthage was, of course, a major enemy of the Romans, but nevertheless received a great deal of its culture from Rome. I would assume that the columns in Carthage, as shown, were indeed copied from Roman ones, which were in turn copied from the Greeks!

Carthage is in Africa, but Asia is generally considered to be the largest continent.

Yes, I WAS a Jr. High School teacher -- why do you ask?

Default correction

Merced---you are correct Africa is not the largest continent by area. Asia is. I thought I was saying the continent which has the MOST countries. Then Africa is the one.

Indeed, Ray, that would be right.

Asia, of course, is filled with a few large countries -- most of Russia, China, India. Africa has so many small countries. Tunisia is one of them.

The history of Carthage and the Punic Wars is very interesting. I don't think that many people know that Hannibal, famous for crossing the Alps with elephants, was the Carthaginian General.

Thanks for an interesting picture.
