Default Greatest Country?

I consider myself a patriot even though for two decades I have despaired that our nation has lost sight of many of the ideas and ideals that made us great. Still, I love my country because, among other things, it is "home," and because although it has a very short history, it can legitimately boast of so many accomplishments over a very brief two centuries.

That is why I was especially struck by the opening scene from HBO's new series called The Newsroom which premiered last night. Watch and comment. . .

The USA is still a great country to live and to be proud of.

Among our great freedoms we have the right to leave if we are not happy here.

I love here, and I am staying.

I love living in United States and cherish the freedom that we have in this country. My heart also belongs to Israel because it is a haven for not only Jews, but for other people that have been unable to live in peace in their native countries. My heart also goes to Canada; it was there that my parents' lived during World War ll; while my father was stationed on the Alcan Highway at Ft. Nelson, British Columbia, my mother lived in Edmonton, Alberta. When I hear Oh Canada it reminds me of my parents' experiences in a warm and welcoming country.

Right now, Canada is being run by "Tea Party North". Apparently, all that will soon change, since immigrants are now officially "icky", taking jobs from Canadians and all that.

I dont think any political party is out for the good of the people...they all have their agenda's

Its not the country I dislike its the people running it...I also dont agree that we should roam the earth and invade when we feel like it....like so many past presidents and congress have done.

As a Vietnam Veteran, I have seen first-hand the horrors of war. It's too easy for our leaders who don't have to go themselves to send our military on no-win missions.
The rich people who run the country love to send the poor off to be killed in wars all over the world.

Perhaps it was too much to hope for, but I did harbor the notion that my OP would start a lively discussion about the clip itself. Instead, what we have mostly are valentines to various nations. Kind of a Miss Universe contest with countries instead of women.

The only person whose post clearly indicates he's watched the clip is Todd. Others may have, but their posts don't reflect it, either explicitly or implicitly. What we're talking about here is the (possible) distinction between the country you love the most and "the greatest country in the world." There is a suggestion that these don't have to match. Or do they? There's also a case being made that the US doesn't qualify as the greatest any more.

Anybody want to talk about the premise of the guy's soliloquy before this thread goes completely off the rails like so many others?

I did watch the video several times. The first time I was turned off by the language, and then by his behavior in front of kids, but the last time I listened to what he said, and agreed with most of it.

The point of the clip is that: "Most Powerful" doesnt necesarily equal "Greatest".
In my opinion, the tip of the spear is journalism, and how they have collectively lost their way in the USA.

I agree 100%..I too am a Vet of foreign war and its very easy for the fat cats to push a button to send off the military. It also justifies their jobs. They would sell their mother to keep their jobs, agenda's and money.

I agree 110% America is not the greatest country in the world :

Wars started countries invaded with no evidence to support such an invasion...Im not affraid to say it...Just who do we think we are ? Just because we live here doesn't mean its the best country.

Taxing the rich is at an all time low and to make up for the low taxes on the rich middle class workers are being laid off and benifits and pensions are being cut.

California and New York credit rating has been down graded

Welfare..generations of families on welfare

Medicad corruption

Governors being jailed

Congressmen being Jailed

President gets impeached

New York senate was named as the most corupt in the nation

Governor of New York get thrown out of office for using government funds for prostitution

Secret Service gets caught in Columbia using posititues

Middle class being squeezed out

Oil prices are down under 80 a barrel but fuel prices at the pumps sky high

All polictical parties are out for the good of their own agendas and not the peoples

I can go on and on and...

Sure does'nt look like the greatest country in the world.

Seems like the imates are running the place.

I was not turned off by the language...he spoke the truth, and sometimes it hurts.

Just one reason why this country is not the greatest....and "Can't find a job is no excuse...the abuse has been going on for decades...mothers and fathers teach their children and they in turn teach their children on how to abuse the system. Anytime their is free money people will dream up ways to steal it, The Government does not have the guts to curb this train wreck.

Regulate the Welfare Abuse
