Traveling with your kids is a great way to experience cruising,and yes you can get adjoing cabins...I would say book early to make sure they are available on the cruise you select.
Depending on the ship, in the main dining room, tables for 4 are offered,as well in the pay dining option venues.
I would, in my opinion, do not do a short cruise...the dynamic of a shorter cruise often makes them more of a party cruise,and by the time you get comfy on board, you are ready you leave the ship. 7 days is what most first timers choose, but 10 would be heaven
