We are back in Mexico after about three weeks in Florida and a pleasant cruise. We had a great trip and enjoyed the Nieuw Amsterdam, H.A.L.'s newest ship.
About two days prior to sailing we received an e mail offering us an upgrade from an outside oceanview cabin to a balcony for $39 each. That was an easy decision... so we took the upgrade of course.
We liked our cabin very much. The ship was mostly well run. Breakfasts and dinners in the main dining room were generally pretty good. Lunches and buffets were mediocre to poor in most cases.
We ate in all three of the upscale restaurants for dinners and were quite pleased with all three. Lunch in the upscale steakhouse was excellent as well.We wanted to try the dim sum lunch in the Asian restaurant but it was already totally booked, upon inquiry, the day of embarkation.
We didnīt just love the layout of the common spaces and felt the atrium area to be cramped brcause of the lack of openess. The shops being changed into one small shopping mall was a bit weird and not to our taste.
The casino being isolated was a bit odd as well. The rentable cabanas were annoying and a waste of common areas.
Embarkation and disembarkation were a total breeze and maybe the best we have ever experienced.
All in all it was a good vacation but I must say the Noordam is still our favorite H.A.L. ship. I had hoped it would be the Nieuw Amsterdam.
