Default Mis-pronouced phrases

I see these all the time, and they have been used so commonly they are now considered normal...

"You've got another think comin'" Isn't it "You've got another thing coming?"

"A blessing in the skies" instead of "a blessing in disguise"

I am a self-professed "Grammar and Spelling Nazi", so yes, all of the above bother me.
Also those who cannot differentiate between "lose" and "loose" and "than" and "then"....don't get me started!

How about, "We eat in the dinning room."?

Donna, I too am known as being the grammar police, a title which I wear proudly because I'm afraid all this texting and computer lingo is really not good for our young people. What will happen to the world of business and the professions if our young people can't master the English language?

It isn't a phenomenon unique to English, either. Spanish is my second language, not my first, but I find that my spelling and grammar are much more correct than that used by my grandchildren and their friends in Costa Rica.

OK, I'm off my soapbox for now!

I thought it was in the long form "If that is what you think, you've got another think comin'." But hey I live in Indiana were we have:

Milan - pronounced My-lan
Versailles - pronounced Ver sails
Russiavill - pronounced Roo sha vill
and our HS opponents in Lebanon - pronounced Leb nan

so what do I know?

I am in the early stages of Alzheimers.

Some lookers might have wanted to post, but were to afraid.

Some cruisers might not have the education, they should have.

I also use to get upset with the use of bad grammer, until I walked in their shoes. Now I am glad they take the time to post, and express their feelings, than for them to be afraid to post.

When life is so good for you that you can look down on people, is good, but what about those you are looking down on?

How many people were turned off by this thread?

Luanne

PS I doubled checked my words before I hit post. I hope my grammer was not checked, so much as my words were heard.

In the 80's I worked with several people native to Illinois who pronounced their home state is though it was Ill-In-Oys.

I used to have a neighbor who had her degree in ENGLISH from U of Georgia, and she always said that if you overcooked your dinner, it was "Runt", instead of ruined. She also would shop at that drug store named WALL-GRINS. Very nice lady,,,but WOW!

"SKY"

When people say "I could care less" when they mean "I couldn't care less".

Irregardless bugs me but if someone can get their point across then I don't get too worked up.

One thing you notice when reading almost every posting, for over ten years, is that everyone makes grammatical, spelling, tense and usage errors. So I don't throw any stones.

There have been enough times I've gone back and re-read one of my posts and caught some pretty bad errors. These have been "their instead of there" or very poor grammar. One nice things about being an Administrator I can fix them.

When posting on a message board people are basically doing a mind dump and not an English paper. It's a casual environment and it's nice to keep it that way.

Take care,
Mike

Mispronouncing "Eye-raq"...
They must be from "Eye-taly" or even worse, "Eye-llinois"

after reading many of the posts, i can identify with some of them, some are regional, some are accents, some are abbreviations, and some are just new usages.

It's what makes us HUMAN, and each one of us unique. If we were all the same and didn't make mistakes, we all would look and sound the same, wouldn't need english teachers (who actually teach AMERICAN English and not the QUEEN'S English)

as one poster said, at least we can communicate to get our ideas across and most of us overlook the obvious.

But in this day and age of instant everything, i think the primary reason is because our CPU (brain) works faster than our output device(mouth or hands) and sometimes we don't use our inpt devices (eyes and ears) to gather the proper context.

Actually it is: You've got another think coming. As in:

Wife; "I think you should stop drinking beer"
Husband; "You've got another think coming"

Regards,
Thomas
