Default Bait and switch or normal?

I booked a Carnival cruise to Hawaii for December 7, 2013. At the time I booked I came onto this site to determine the best luau to attend. When I did that I listed all the port days and times.
Hilo, United States 10:00 am 7:00 pm
Maui, United States
8:00 am 11:00 pm
Oahu, United States 9:00 am 11:00 pm
Kauai, United States 8:00 am 5:00 pm
Kona, United States 7:00 am
4:00 pm

We made a deposit but did not paid the cruise in full. Carnival changed the port times and we never never received notice of it. I only knew this because I'm on a roll call forum and someone talked about receiving an e-mail of the port time changes. My guess is because my cruise wasn't paid in full I didn't receive this e-mail.

Here are the new times:

Hilo, United States 10:00 am 7:00 pm No change
Maui, United States
7:00 am 8:00 pm Reduced port time 2 hours (gain one hour in the morning lose 3 hours at night)

Oahu, United States 7:00 am 9:00 pm Reduced port time 2 hours at night increased port time in the morning.
Kauai, United States 8:00 am 6:00 pm Increased port time one hour
Kona, United States 7:00 am
3:00 pm Reduced port time 1 hour

In the end we lose 2 hours of port time. The problem is all luaus end at 9PM. Because Maui and Oahu changed from 11PM to 8PM and 9PM this means we won't be in port at the right time to book a luau. I booked this cruise because of the 11PM port times in Oahu and Maui. Carnival switched those times without telling me. This to my way of thinking is a classic bait and switch. What do you guys think?

I can understand if a ship's port times are changed due to sea conditions or civil unrest in a region or illness (Swine flu). But the reason one of the posters received from Carnival for the changes was "the ship can't be in port during sunset." I know this is a load because the January 2014 cruise has 11PM port times. I would love to hear what you guys think.

First, I have to ask how did you book your cruise?

As an agent, I'm always getting notices from Carnival when they change port times and I forward this information to my clients as soon as I get them. And I get these irregardless of whether final payment has been made or not. So if you booked this directly with Carnival, it sounds like they have a major problem of providing information to their passengers.

I think this is more common than you think. Our Med. cruise changed a port on us somewhere along the way (Split, Croatia instead of Dubrovnik.) The changes may have been out of Carnival's control. E-mail notification may be due to options on your account, and like Pete said may have gone to your TA but not forwarded to you.

I guess you could always "jump ship" in Maui or Oahu and take an island hopper to the next port.

You still have plenty of time, so, you can look and possibly go with a different cruise? The reason for the change sounds kink of odd to me??

We are looking at changing maybe to an NCL, Princess or a different Carnival Cruise that has overnights. My hubby and I took a Celebrity cruise to Alaska. We don't care for that cruise line. I'm nervous changing to another Carnival cruise that this same thing with happen again.

Pete you have a great point, I did book it through a travel agent so maybe that is why I didn't get notice of the change in port times. Normally I wouldn't care, but this takes away the option of a luau unless I miss the ship and catch it in the next port and I really don't want to do that. So now we are up in the air.

My hubby wants to call Carnival and ask about the changes. This is how my hubby and I are different. That call seems like a complete waste of time to me. They aren't going to change the port times back because he asks. Even If the offered him $500 per person of on board credit I still wouldn't want this cruise because it no longer meets my requirements. They won't offer that and I don't expect them to. But it just shows how useless I think this call is because aside from saying we made a mistake the orignial times are correct I don't want this cruise. Luckily there are no flights involved so I can cancel and rebook without issues. I just got to figure out what to rebook. I want the NCL cruise and my hubby doesn't want to fly to port. So we have issues.

We did the NCL Pride of America around the islands and it was very nice. I wrote a complete review on it, but can't post it on CM because it's too long. If you'd like to read it, send me a PM and I'll provide a link to it.

While the cruise was nice and the staff was very good, the food was just okay - definitely nothing worth mentioning, and the ship was also okay. But this is basically just taking a hotel around the islands and not really a cruise. However, it provides alot of time for exploring, even spending the night in a couple of ports, so you can't beat the itinerary if a luau is a must-do for you. We rented a car in every port and it was an awesome way to see the islands.

The price is roughly the same as the longer cruises that leave the West Coast and you do have to get airfare, but you don't have to spend alot of days at sea. You can arrive a couple of days early so you can sightsee around Oahu. And then if you really want to explore further, like we did, you can fly over to Maui and spend a few days there before flying home.

We spent a total of almost 3 weeks there and absolutely loved our experience and are so glad we did it. Truly a magical place to visit, but I couldn't imagine doing a roundtrip from the West Coast and only getting a few hours in a few ports - just not enough time to explore this tropical paradise.

But it really depends on what you want to do, which itinerary best fits you, how much time you have, and how much you want to spend.

With it being Hawaii, it could be because of tide conditions, especially ports where you are tendered.

We just got back from Hawaii last night and loved it!! Can't recommend it highly enough. Booked again this morning for September

Kat, I agree with you about the Phone call.

What you need to do is cancel the cruise and get yourself a good TA.

Because we used our cruise rewards points we are sadly restricted to only using the TA that is part of the card. My hubby is thinking save the money and don't do Hawaii instead do something cheaper. I'm inclined to agree with him after what happened with this cruise. I'm about 95% sure we will cancel this cruise. We had balcony room so this cruise was over $1400 per person. We can do a 7 day for a lot less money. In fact our $800 worth cruise points makes it a real good deal. Or problem is I now feel like I'm back at step one. What cruise do I want, what cruise line do I want, and when do I want to cruise.

Kat, I do understand your dilemma. I hope that you can find an alternate cruise that you and your Hubby can enjoy.

Kat - I'm in the same boat right now. I booked back to back cruises on the Brilliance OTS for next January - found out today the second part of the B2B was chartered out from underneath me. So, while I love the Brilliance class of ships, to spend that much on air for just a 5 day cruise just isn't going to fly (ha ha), so know I'm looking for another cruise.

That sucks. What happens if you already booked your flight? I cancelled this cruise and now I'm going on a seven day to the eastern Caribbean on Princess. We decided to save some money and book a less experience cruise. The Hawaiian cruise was about $1300 per person. The new cruise is $600 per person. So Carnival saved use about $1400. That should be enough to book my air. I can't drive to Fort Lauderdale like I can to Long Beach CA

Carnival seems to be the industry leader in changing and especially reducing port times.

They are hoping we won't notice. But I have a close to Eidetic memory so that doesn't work so good for me. If I'm been somewhere, like Venice Italy in 2008, you could drop me there and I wouldn't get lost. In fact as I write this pictures of Venice are flashing in my mind. The train station, my hotel, how the water bus works and where all the water bus stops are. I have always remembered in picture form, during test I would close my eyes and see the text book. To bad I'm dyslexic and I remember things in the wrong order. For example I just realized I spelt Caribbean with two rrs instead of two bbs on my countdown clock. BTW my Crazy Sis and my nephew have eidetic memory without being dyslexic, lucky ducks. It appears to be genetic from my dad's side. You didn't play the card game casino with my grandfather on the last hand he knew what everyone's cards were. With me it movie triva or the six degrees of Kevin Bacon.
