Default Medical question

Has anyone here ever used a holistic product in lieu of an RX for treatment for a medical problem?

I was recently diagnosed with a problem and my doctor prescribed a medication which I filled but after researching it on line I am reluctant to do so because of possible side effects .

I read an article today in a health magazine suggesting a holistic product and from what I've read this far has minimal side effects .

I have also heard about using the alternative meds, but I would talk to your doctor about any meds you take...or thinking to take in case it doesn't mix well with other meds you may be taking.

Depends on how serious the health issue is. If you have a wart and want to try duc tape to get rid of it. That is one thing. If you have cancer and want to try the new egg shell diet that is another thing entirely. I agree with Donna that you should talk to your doctor about any alternative medicine especially if you have a very serious health condition and any delay in treatment could impact your life.

I am not a big pill taker, and when I watch these drug commercials on tv, I have no idea what they are for, but, the list of side effects can scare the bejesus out of you.

I side with Kat...something simple, after talking to a dr, fine...something major, then you really have to weigh the pros and cons, then do it again!

My doctor is also a holistic med doctor and in the past had me take things like slow niacin for high cholesterol, milk thistle for liver support when my prescribed meds raised my liver enzymes . As katlady said it depends on how serious of a medical problem it is. Cinnamon used daily can really help with high blood pressure. I would maybe talk to your doc and she if its something he thinks is worth trying. If you don't mind saying I'd be curious as to what I may know about your situation.

Homeopathy is about as closely synonymous with Placebo Effect as you can get.

I have a tin bracelet that just radiates negative ions like a M.F. that I would like to sell for a small fortune.... it cures cancer, repels mosquitoes AND makes you irresistible to the opposite sex. Trust me.

I disagree to a point. Things like Nedi pots work great as well as other things,it depends on what it is. I always thought the people who bought those bracelets were getting ripped off and were silly to spend their money them.

Nedi pot is less a medicine and more of a device. But I get your point. Like eating ginger for seasickness.

If you are taking medications for other medical conditions, I would highly recommend talking to your doctor AND pharmacist first before using a homeopathic remedy as there MAY be interactions between the medications and the homeopathic remedy. I take no stance on whether homeopathic remedies or medicines are more effective. I am more worried about the potential interactions between the two!

BTW - if you ever read the warnings and possible side effects of Tylenol, most people would NEVER take it!

Yes. It's a Neti pot.

Bad heartburn, baking soda and water works very well.

I strongly do believe that there is a place for holistic medicine but one needs to know when.
Things like the baking soda and water for heartburn, peroxide for mild gingivitis and yes even duct ate to remove a wart( and yes it does work) are worth doing .

We live in a pill popping nation that at times does more harm than good. The OP didn't say what his problem was so I'm not saying don't follow your doctors advise .The best thing you can do for yourself is to educate yourself and always question your doctor , their not G-D and push way too many unneeded drugs.

When I referenced Homeopathy I wasn't referring to benign external remedies... its the stuff people put inside their bodies that either has absolutely no effect besides placebo, or worse, has unintended side-effects (that have not been studied or reported to the FDA).

The worry is that people put their faith in an ineffective Homeopathic remedy IN PLACE of effective standard medical treatment.

I will eventually discuss this with my PCP . I am thinking that even though she os a DO she probably would not suggest a holistic treatment . The doctor who prescribed the RX is not my PCP.
