Default MicroSoft Surface 2

Folks,

We are contemplating purchase of a Surface 2 (not the Pro) so we can take it along when we travel.

I see Mike has the Surface 2 Pro already.

Any thoughts on the non-Pro model? All we would really use it for is connecting to the internet for email and browsing. The light weight makes it really attaractive. We plan on getting the more expensive keyboard, and also a wireless mouse to use with it as both of us prefer that.

What about security? Does Defender do a good job?

As always, any comments are welcome.

Oh, by the way, the Kindle PaerWhite is all that it claims to be. Exceeded our expectations. We will be using them a lot, as in 2 or so hours we leave to catch a plane to San Juan where we will embark on Summit this Saturday.

Thanks in advance,

Windows Defender is not a "real" good virus and malware detection and removal program. Bitdefender and Kaspersky are ranked much, much higher. Defender is "adequate" for known viruses but not good at catching "zero day", new viruses.

I would stay away from trying to put something like McAffee or Norton on a Surface (I don't even know if they will run on it.) They are CPU and disk intensive a.k.a. Bloatware.

So far I do like the Surface Pro2 but it is really a PC in tablet form. The biggest challenge for me is treating it like a tablet and not a full laptop. I am also "learning" Windows 8.1. I have to say that Windows 8 is definitely easier on the tablet than on a "non-touchscreen" system. The touchscreen interface forces you to "forget" about the way you used to use Windows.

One negative about the Surface. The camera sucks. Low megapixels and not good for low light pictures. The video is better than my Netbook but no where near the quality of my laptop. I recommend using a real camera to capture those vacation pictures.

Take care,
Mike

D/S wants one for Christmas but that's not going to happen. I'm thinking maybe for graduation or he can just save and buy it himself. How many electronics does a kid need!

Mike ....D/S has a good laptop but he's playing the "it will be good for college"card whats your thought on that. Would it be better for him than his laptop?

I would say that the Surface Pro 2 would be a nice thing to have for carrying around campus but the keyboard is not good for taking notes, or other functions requiring a keyboard, while it sits on your "lap". However the keyboard does work well on a stable surface.

If he currently has a decent laptop then I would say "no". A Surface isn't really a PC replacement a Surface2 Pro "could be" but he will want the laptop. Plus the price will probably drop by 1/3 within the next year or two.

If I had to choose between a Surface or a lightweight laptop, I would take the laptop.

Take care,
Mike
