Default Oil Spill in Galveston

Unfortunately, a huge, oil-ladened barge was struck by a cargo ship in Galveston Bay. The barge was ruptured and many gallons of oil have escaped and soiled the water and shores. Maritime traffic is at a standstill and that includes cruise ships in the area.

The Caribbean Princess is holed up in LaPorte, just north of Galveston Bay. The Navigator of the Seas, Carnival Magic and Carnival Triumph are all in Galveston at the same time. The two Carnival ships are never there on the same day. The Triumph is at a cargo terminal just east of the cruise terminal. Hopefully, the Coast Guard will clear these ships to leave soon.

Mike, thank you for keeping us posted.

I hope the oil spill won't cause any major damage to the environment and that the cruiseships can resume their itineraries.

Sharon, do not click on the link. Search for the webcams in your search engine and they will come up. There are 5 of them with the cruise ships in them.

I have friends on the ship. I have been in touch with her all day. They are still I port at Galveston. They boarded this morning. Last night they went back to their home in Woodlands Texas. I hope the ship will be able to get underway soon for them. I feel so bad for them.

I just looked through the Carnival Magic bow cam... the ship is still in port though at the cargo terminal that the Triumph was at earlier. I can also see an oil boom all across the water in front of the ship, from one shore to the other side. It appears the ships are not going anywhere tonight.

It is now Tuesday morning and I see all of the cruise ships are STILL in port in Houston and Galveston. How sad. To rub salt into the wounds... IT IS 48f IN THE AREA!! So much for the spring break in the warm Caribbean.

I saw the Coast Guard was requiring cleaning of the ships before they leave port. Seems like they would have to sail back out through the mess.

I just talked to my friend. she and husband are on their way home. They decided to leave this morning and will get a 100% refund. They live about 2 hours from the port so getting home is just a ride for them. I feel so bad for them. Carnival had cut Jamaica and Grand Cayman because of the shortened cruise. They had most looked forward to Grand Cayman.
What a mess for the cruise lines as well as the passengers.

Looking out the Magic bow cam, I see the oil booms all across the bay once again. They are not going anywhere, anytime soon...

This was just posted by John Heald

And here is the latest news from Galveston:
Currently the Port of Galveston remains closed to all ship traffic. Earlier this morning, the USCG dispatched helicopters over the affected area in the channel to evaluate whether it is safe to allow ship passage. We will keep guests updated on their findings as soon as we know more information. Additionally, we will complete the cleaning of the oil on the ship's hull that is required by local authorities.
Those guests who elected not to sail are currently disembarking.
Carnival Triumph
If all goes well, and receive approval to depart later today by 5:00 pm, we will proceed with our plans to visit Cozumel on Thursday. As a result of this change, you will receive a one day prorated refund within two weeks and a 25% future cruise discount.

Carnival Magic
If all goes well, and we receive approval to sail by 11:00AM, we will proceed to visit Grand Cayman with a 6 hour call. Alternatively, if we cannot sail by this time we will need to replace our call to Grand Cayman with a call to Progresso. Our visit to Cozumel will remain as scheduled. As a result of this change, you will receive a two day prorated refund within two weeks. If the itinerary changes further guests will also receive a 25% future cruise discount.

Please note the Carnival Magic will need to turn around to complete the cleaning. The crew are doing what they always do in making sure the guests despite all of this are having a great time.
more news soon.

The Magic has made a break for it and is in the clear!! Meanwhile, the Navigator of the Seas and Triumph are still at dockside in Galveston and the Caribbean Princess is still at dockside in LaPorte (Houston)
