Wink I feel trapped

Just sent off the passports for renewal. Now we can't leave the country until they come back.

I think you'll be Okay. Just prepare yourself to see an older person on the new passport than the one on the old passport.

We ran out of visa pages a few months ago and adding pages to the old passport was almost as expensive as getting a new one, so we went ahead and just did a renewal. We ordered the large passport with more visa pages. The old passports were only four years old but I was amazed at how much older, and fatter, the guy on the new one was. The nice thing was that it only took just over two weeks to get the new passports.

Take care,
Mike

That's what we've been hearing from clients; about 3 weeks average to get the new ones.

We got the opportunity to go on a last minute trip to Asia last year. We knew we needed to renew our passports, but weren't quite ready to do it so quickly. We had 2 weeks notice, so we sent them off expedited, which wasn't cheap. Sent them on a Thursday and got them back the next Friday! 8 days - thought that was great service - they've definitely come along way in processing passports quickly over the last few years, that's for sure.

Ours expire in September, and I just filled out the renewal forms last night. They'll give you the "fat" ones at no extra charge on renewals if you ask, so I optimistically checked the box for that. Mike's right--they charge a bunch to add pages to the skinny ones. Our old ones only have one or two pages left--we always seem to cut it close but have never needed to get the extra pages.

No doubt Terry would have had to get them in her working days, except she had two passports back then, one for pleasure travel and an "official" passport for her many travels overseas for Uncle Sam. The problem with the official passports back then (don't know if it's still true) is that they were RED. I hated that. She thought I was nuts but I always insisted that she take the "normal" one on business trips too. I just had this vision of a bad guy on a plane looking at everybody's US passports and coming across a RED one. Not the time you want to stand out in a crowd. You'd think they could just put some sort of code in the passport number or something to indicate that it's "official." Maybe they've thought of that by now.

The thing I don't like about renewing is that for the first couple years you look like such a rookie. . .so few stamps. But that's just the whiny complaint of those of us who have been fortunate to see so much of this planet.

It's been quite a few years, but I was able to visit Vietnam, Japan and the Philippines without a pass port.

They made sure to flatten my face as much as possible. A shorter person took the photo of me while we were both standing. They got a great shot of my chin.

Renewed mine last year and I also noticed that the passport number was different. Since this was my first renewal this may be standard practice.

This'll be my seventh and the number has never been carried over. PS, they didn't used to be good for ten years.

I noticed text on the application that mentioned the number would change. I'll have to adjust my cruise check in data when they arrive.

Also if your passport number is in your airline profiles, you should go in and change those too.

I am now free to move about the globe. Woo Hoo!

I notice the is no issuing agency or the Department of State is the agency. It used to read New Orleans Passport Authority.

Yep: The issuing agency is United States Department of State. Use U.S. instead of United States when entering the "Issuing agency" information online. Most of the text boxes won't accommodate the required number of characters.

FWIW: If you apply for a GOES card you can zip through Customs and Immigration. If you have an American Express Platinum or Centurion card they will credit you the $100 fee if you use the card to pay. It also gives you access to the TSA pre-screen line at airport security. Both are great when you travel. At pre-screen you don't have to remove your shoes, belt, computer or electronics. UNLESS you have a pacemaker. Then it's the same but the line is much shorter.

Take care,
Mike

It is not available "yet" at cruise ports. Only at airports.

However, a GOES, Nexus, Custom and Immigration line is supposed to be implemented at the port of Miami. I'm not sure of the time frame.

Take care,
Mike
