Default Koningsdam Cruise Part 5, Tortola

Koningsdam Cruise Part 5 December 2016
Saturday Dec. 17, Tortola

Tired of the slow breakfast service in the Dining Room, we opted for the Lido Buffet this morning and enjoyed a light breakfast of tea, croissants (chocolate ones were good!), and fresh fruit. We sat by the sunny window with the beautiful orchid on our table, and watched our approach to the island of Tortola.

After breakfast we went for a walk on Deck 3, partially to watch our docking in Tortola, and also to enjoy the walk on the open deck. On the Koningsdam, the walking deck is very narrow, in places it is single file, which makes it difficult for speed walkers and joggers to pass slow walkers like us. We usually enjoy the walking deck on cruise ships, because when tired of walking, you can sit and rest in one of the cushioned teak deck chairs, but the Koningsdam has no deck chairs, no room to sit anywhere. If one wanted to go for a "stroll" in a wheelchair or with a walker, there really was little room to do so.

As our pre-booked shore excursion in Tortola wasn't until after lunch, we had an early lunch at the Lido Buffett. During the week, James favoured the pre-made baguette sandwiches with roast beef or pastrami, or the thick tasty tuna sandwiches on whole wheat, they were really very good. I liked the roast chicken, potatoes and cooked vegetables, and we both enjoyed some cream puffs and fruit tarts for dessert.

At 1:15 p.m. we met on the pier for our Tortola Experience Tour, and were led to an open air bus with just enough room for 11 passengers. Despite a sudden, but short -lived torrential downpour as soon as we got on the bus, the weather was beautiful for the rest of the day. Our tour guide/driver gave a running commentary as he took us through town, up and down very steep hills, and around very scary bends in the winding roads around the island. He stopped the bus a few times for some amazing photo ops looking down on gorgeous beaches. We did eventually wind our way down to one of these beaches, called Cane Garden Bay. It was a small, but very clean beach, with easy access to the water (gradual walk in, no sudden drop, and no high waves). Unfortunately we only had one hour at the beach, and I stayed in the warm turquoise water almost the whole time, while James sat at a table under an umbrella.

After another rollercoaster ride back to the ship, we were back onboard by 4:30 and went to find something to eat. We had our hearts set on some delicious fries from the Dive-In poolside burger joint that we had enjoyed on another Holland America ship. Once there, we were disappointed to discover they had NO FRIES! We couldn't believe it! So we tried the N.Y. Deli/Pizza place up on Deck 10 instead, hoping for a slice of pizza, but they don't sell slices, only whole pies, so we each got a small pizza made to order. I have to admit, they were very tasty thin crust pizzas and we thoroughly enjoyed them. Of course after a whole pizza each, we didn't need dinner, so we went to the 6:45 Pub Trivia in Billboard, which was fun. We didn't win, but on this ship, even the losers get prizes - everyone gets a Holland America pin.

We tried to get in the main theatre for the 7:15 show, but it was packed solid, so we went back for the 8:30 show and got there early enough for good seats. Tonight's show was called The Piano Man, a tribute to the music of Elton John and Billy Joel, by a U.K. entertainer named Terry Davies, his two back-up singers, and the HAL band. It was a wonderful, rollicking show of John and Joel classics, and the highlight for me was the Elton John tribute to John Lennon called Empty Garden, which was accompanied on the surround screen by sentimental photos and videos of the late Beatle. Terry Davies, a talented and consummate entertainer, along with his back-up singers (one of whom was his wife) along his son Nick Davies, also do a show called ABBAFAN on alternate weeks on the ship, when they are not performing elsewhere around the globe. The cruise following ours did not get to see them because they were headed home for the holidays, but if you’re interested, you can see a sample performance on You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foC6UWtx4Js

Speaking of heading home, we headed back to our room at 9:30 on this evening, because there really was nothing else going on that interested us. How pitiful.
