It's sad but someone's post will be the last.

It is sad. Every morning I wait and hold my breath, hoping you're all still here. So far so good. Don't want it to be the last.

I just can't believe this is happening. It's so sad. Wish they'd at least give us a date for the last day to post . . .

That is very likely.

Maybe Paul can give us a bit of an extension.

I posted the following before but nobody responded.

I post on a nostalgia board .They were having financial problems about 10 years ago and asked people to donate $25 each for a lifetime opportunity to post .Those who chose not to donate were limited to 2 posts every 24 hours .This site is still operating and is very active.

Are you suggesting that we donate $ to Cruisemates?

I think things happen for a reason....most Cruisemates it seems, have found a new home to keep friendships going...a good thing.

Donating money will not stop the site from shutting down.

IB's lackadaisical attitude may keep the site up for years. It takes them forever to do anything.

Now I've probably made them mad and they'll just shut it down for spite.

Take care,
Mike

The site that I referred to is a Brooklyn Nostalgia Message board that has been in existence from 1998 to present. They have less active members than Cruisemates .I have been posting on that board every day except when I was on vacation or hospitalized.

People love posting there just as they do on CM .

Cruisemates is one of many websites, under the umbrella of a large company. Like with any business, they have the right to run their business as they see fit. Eliminating, combining or whatever, it's a business decision.

We may not be happy about this, but surely you have all seen the writing on the wall for a long time now.....social media, has left in its wake, many sites that could not withstand FB and the like.

This is a done deal, and one morning you will see, "page unavailable".....get your ducks in a row, for all your contacts.....be happy for the good times we had and for many will continue elsewhere....the obituary has been written.

Whoa!!!

It's been many months since I last tuned in here or posted. Real surprised with this discussion. One thing I realized as I was reading these posts is all familar names, no new blood. Also went on "cruise line Fans" forum tonight and they have not had a new post since the 1st of the month. Trip is correct, younger cruisers are more interested in FB type, rather than cruise forums.

Cruise Critic. I don't think anyone has ever heard about that site.

If you have been a long time user of the site you will notice that the number of postings have considerably dropped.

Take care,

I looked in at CC and did not care for it.

Once CruiseMates closes, I don't expect to look for other sites. CM has been special as far as the people that I met and I will live with those memories.

Manuel,
I have used CC for years, but not for general discussions, have posted (under a different name) many thousands of times to communicate w/others on upcoming cruises. CM website and all the other cruise forums have been slandering CC for years. Maybe there are jerks on the general discussion portion of CC, but the portion where you post on your upcoming cruises they are regular folks like here on CM.
If and when this site closes, as an alternate try using CC for your upcoming cruises. As you probably know another benefit is you can hook up w/others for private tours, transfers & onboard activities. That portion of the site has active cruisers like yourself.

I agree with OFC about CC. I was banned on there 3 times under different names while trying to post under the general discussion area. One time was because I found that one lady who had thousands of posts on there and acting like she knew everything about everything and was extremely opinionated had, in fact, never even been on a cruise! I asked her 4 times how many cruises she had been on and she refused to respond. I finally posted a link to another site where she had admitted she'd never been on a cruise. Got banned for that one!

But as OFC mentioned, going onto the future cruise area and getting to know others who are going on your cruise is a good way to meet some good people. It's especially helpful if you're looking to share excursions, which we've done several times.

Then again, CC is a commercial site, so there are more stringent rules, which is not necessarily a good thing. But I really got to hate the discussion areas due to all the negativity and downright bullying that goes on.

I really liked Cruise Line Fans, as it's very similar to Cruise Mates, but as OFC pointed out, it was gotten stale and not alot of posting lately.

I also tried Cruise Addicts, but was not impressed with that one, either.

I looked at Fodors and definitely not as interactive as CM.

I always loved CM as there was a wonderful mix of great people willing to share thoughts, ideas, and experiences without the negativity you see on many sites. Everybody always kept it civil and people could disagree without being mean or without reprisal.

As for donating to the cause to keep the forum active, had it simply been a matter of money, I think that Internet Brands (the owner) may have offered some options. Since they did not communicate any specific reasons to the Moderators, I can only assume they were not interested. Being such an active forum, I would have thought they might offer it for sale and at least made some money from it before closing it, but that didn't happen, either.

As with everyone here, it will be missed.

I have been posting on Cruise Critic for 9 years .I have never had a problem there .Many of the Cruise Mates regulars actively post on Cruise Critic .

It is a 99% cruise board ,no political discussions .

They also have contests ,I have won prizes several times .The only negative for me about CC is that they do not have a PM feature.

If you follow the John Heald's blog, you can easily read how people feel about CC...they like us, are a good site for gathering info...but, they've had many arguments, people flaming at posters for no good reason, people banned and negative posts galore. Compared to them, we were the friendly neighborhood site..the mods were on top of it, and removed posts that went off the rails.

We used to have two nightly chat rooms....east coast and west coast, and it was a fun, busy two hours to host. As they say, those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end...

For me 8 years on CC and 8 on CM (less the time I was not allowed here) .I never had any problems on CC ,but then again i only post on cruise related topics there. On CM that was never the case because there are always other things to discuss .I would have preferred if CM was like CC in that respect.
