Don't panic Rosemary - I'll be on the ship with you along with my husband
and my mother. Some of the reviews are pretty scary but on one of the other
cruise message boards there is at least one very positive review. There are several
people going on the Mediterranea this Sunday that have promised to post
their experiences, good or bad, so will be interesting to see what they have to
There is still a month to go so maybe some of the kinks will get straightened
out before we sail.
Looks like a beautiful ship and if you've never cruised you'll just be amazed at
how much there is to do. Don't let the worry spoil your anticipation of the cruise.
We were on the 11/30 sailing of the Costa Mediterranea. This was our 38th cruise and 3rd on Costa. The ship and cabin design was very good. Material and workmanship was very good. We enjoyed the non-stop lounge entertainment and the shows. We had good service in the dining room. We enjoyed most of our dinners there. The CD staff was very good. There was 2280 passengers (1134 Americans), the rest mainly were Italian, French. German and Spanish. We enjoyed playing trivia in several languages.
Embarkation was handled very poorly. The buffet with the exception of pizza was unappealing and tasteless. Prices for drinks were high. They charge $8.95 for in room movies, CNN was not available. When we cruise in the Carribean, entertainment is important to us so we had a good time but there is lots of room for improvement.
I was on the Dec. 7th sailing of the Costa Mediterranea and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although the decor is a little overdone for my taste, the ship is beautiful. I found the staff, service, and food (contrary to many reports) excellent. My wait staff was exceptionally outstanding and helped make every meal pleasurable. Evening entertainment in the main theater was a bit lacking, but the quality and variety of lounge entertainment more than made up for this weakness, as did the exceptional and energetic Animation Team (entertainment staff). There were a great number of activities during the day, many done poolside. I know Kuki is working on a review of his cruise, and I am presently writing a mega- review of my cruise for CruiseReviews that I hope to have published soon. I am anxious to read Kuki's review in order to compare our experiences.
This was the worse cruise and traveling experience I ever had. From rude staff to horrible service. The food was terrible. From the dining room, cold food. Disgusting at times. You cannot eat the meat, The breakfast may be your best bet. But you must get it when it first comes out. The only show I enjoyed was the talent night by the passengers on Saturday. Otherwise forget it. Whoever gave that last positive review, they must ahve been on a different ship. I must say the room was nice a comfortable. And the steward, an asian man, was terrific. You can watch the Italian staff, rude as rude can be. Pools were packed, with children. Beach chairs on sailing days were hard to find. Ports were okay to terrible. (Puerto Rico was terrific) Captain is a jerk, his name is Mossimo. The European passengers are also rude. They do not believe in lines and will push and shove you at the buffets. I really have never had such a terrible traveling experience. And I just got off the ship yesterday. Every, and I repeat, EVERY, passenger I talked to, hated this crew. Not one without a major complaint. This crew needs to send all of the employees out to charm school, and fast. The cooks must also get to cooking school, fast.
Dear Tom, I am sorry you had such an awful time. I have made my mind up that nothing is going to spoil my first ever cruise. I guess we will just make the best of it.
How many cruises have you been on before this one?
Rosemary: I have been on four cruises in the past. They ranged from okay to great. I hope you have better luck with Costa, but unless they change the entire crew before you cruise, you will be out of luck. Remember, try to eat the pasta. That is about the only thing that is done right. At luch, find the hamburgers that are cooked. And bring your own soda on board. They will charge you an arm and a leg otherwise. The security on board is useless. You can bring a missle on board and send it throught the x ray machine. The security does not even look at the screen. It is such a joke. I usually like late seating for the dining room. But the late seating is often kept waiting outside for long periods of times. You dont finish until about 11:00 P.M. On the days at sea, get up early to ge a deck chair. I would reccomend about 7:30. And mark your seats. Not just with a towel, but a brick if you can find it. When you get to the private Island, Catalina I believe you will be sailing to, get your chairs at the end of the beach. Otherwise you will have no room to move. Any other questions feel free to ask. And also get ready for the rudest people you have ever met in your life,l
Rosemary, I am sorry to say that for the most part I agree with Tom. We were on the Dec 14 sailing and the Italian staff are the rudest service people I have met, and the males are so full of themselves. The food was edible, but not nearly as good as what we have eaten on HAL or the Carnival Legend. THe desserts were miserable and I expected so much from the Italians in the pastry area. The Pizza is quite a delight though. Many different flavors and very good. I have never been on a cruise where they served canned pineapple and canned pears in the fresh fruit area!
I have made a formal report with my TA CruisesOnly regarding the poor food and service received on this ship. I don't expect anything to come of it, but it made me feel better. I will not pursue this any further except to say that I will not be back on Costa. We will be on HAL in 75 days and then again on Nov 12 for the Westerdams 17 nights Transatlantic Crossing.
Crusing Italian style is not for me . I guess it is all about standards and expectations.
I spent the last day in my cabin severely ill. Norwalk or Food poisoning-anyones guess. However, my TA was on a FAM visit the day we embarked , and he also had the same stomach illness the next morning. Wash your hands regulary , and you should be fine.
If you go with a positive attitude and sense of adventure, you will be sure to have a good time. I still contend that my food and service were exemplary on my cruise. Now, I was fortunate enough to be served by experienced wait staff that had done a previous stint on the Atlantica, so I listened to their suggestions for each course and was NEVER disappointed. I wish everyone would have been so fortunate and their experience may have been much different. I also believe that a smile and friendly gesture will always provide more positive results than frowning and complaining -
If there is ONE thing I have learned through this message board,it is that I WILL keep a positive, friendly attitude. This is my vacation, and getting all frustrated and nasty will only spoil it for me. It certainly won't make any difference to Costa !!!!!. I realy think they are trying to get on track . I had to call them about something on Friday and they were as friendly and pleasant as can be. I am going to have the time of my life!!!! and I intend it to be a good time.
First I would like to tell all the new cruisers that you should never listen to someone elses opinion before you have experienced the cruise yourself! Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Nobody dictates how much fun or enjoyment you have out of anything. Lets be honest I know because I am from NJ and people are rude as hell but that doesn't change the way I treat people. So you go and enjoy yourself and forget about the idiot who let someone else tell him they would hold the boat! If you let people take advantage they usually will. Have fun...your on vacation....I will on Jan 25.......booonvoyage....
Rosemary and others, I finally finished my review of the Dec. 7th sailing on the Costa Med and it is published at cruisereviews.com (with pictures). I hope the details I provide will put your mind atease about your upcoming cruise. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
As you know I was on the ship just one sailing prior to yours. We were on a media trip, escorted by some of Costa's public relations people.
Normally on these "media trips" the groups are assigned the ship's top wait staff, and it's actually difficult to be objective in judging the service levels because you're getting the best. However, when it's less than stellar you have to wonder about what the other passengers are getting, if you're getting the best.
I understand that you were on an "industry" trip the following week. I certainly believe you experienced what you said you did, but don't think they could have turned around all their service issues so quickly.... especially after reading other cruisers reviews from people on the ship for the same sailing as you.
After seeing and hearing the reactions of the people in our media group the week prior, I think it's more likely that they were more careful about servicing your "industry group" the next week... to avoid more bad press.
During our time onboard I discussed some of my concerns with Costa's VP of Hotel Operations and their PR people. And have since heard that they are trying to address some of the issues I addressed, and that some of the problems were caused because so many of their top staff had been placed on Fortuna for her debut in Europe.
As I stated in my article about the ship, I think she has HUGE potential, I'm just not so sure it could have all been turned around in a week. I'm hoping to visit her again somewhere down the road to see if my opinions of her change.
Guess we were truly lucky, we are not travel agents, nor VIP's, we do know good service when we receive it. And we did receive just that, good service. Kuki, being a paid critic, who happens to be darn good, must look for the good, and the bad, otherwise his review of a new ship would be just more of yada, yada, yada.
There is not a thing that is prefect, we fly first class, I hate to tell you, it's not prefect (as I am sure you already know). Great but not prefect but as long as we can, we will fly this class and enjoy. My advice to all the first time cruisers on this beautiful ship, remember you are not a critic, just enjoy.
I will be sailing in March on the Costa Atlantica. I have been reading the unhappy reviews and I am now sitting on pins and needles. There are three threads that come through in the reviews I have read, first the food issue, (not good) secondly, attitude of the crew,(not good) and third and most disturbing is apathy from Costa. I hope they (Management) see that customers are not thrilled and are not waiting in line to get back on the ship. The cruisers that write to this board want to enjoy cruising, we want to enjoy ourselves for a week. It is pretty simple. Please Costa, listen to your customers while you have them.
Your points are well taken. It was obvious that "management" was trying to address the concerns of passengers and definite changes were afoot. With that said, however, I can only say that I did have a wonderful cruise and my food was excellent. In my review I mentioned INCONSISTENCY as the best way to describe the Costa experience. Let's hope for the sake of all passengers that my experience will become the norm on future cruises.
Well since I started this thread I guess Iwill end it too. My trip was the best I could hope for. We had a fabulous time. We climbed ruins,we swam and snorkled with stingrays and we shopped till we dropped. On boardlife wassimply grand. The food was great, and there was so much everywhere. We danced,we played, we laughed. Truly a memorable time. Pictures are posted in the gallery.
Hi Rosemary - I've been reading all the answers to your queries about your first cruise. I AM SOOOO HAPPY that you had a good time. I've been on a few cruise lines - NCL (excellent) and Carnival (was alright - but only 4-day cruise so didn't get the FULL effect). I am now looking at booking myself and hubby dearest on the Costa Mediterranea - so am going thru' all the reviews. I'm a person that likes to go in with an open attitude - and hopefully after routing thru' some of the comments at this website will make up my mind whether to take the plunge and try out the Costa cruise line. I have to admit that NCL with their Freestyle option of eating is something I really like (and I'm a Type 1 diabetic as well - so it suites me to a T). You never sit with the same people unless you want to - and that way you meet more people from all ends of the world. I would recommend NCL for your next cruise. You are probably hooked by now on your first. I know we were!!! Au revoir from -34C Montreal
Dear Anna from Chilly Montreal, Yes I am hooked !!!!! I am already planning the next cruise and I think it will be with Costa near the end of the year.
I hope you enjoy the Mediterranea as much as I did. We loved our table mates. They were a welcome and interesting end to the long days. We all chose different activities so it was good to compare notes.
I know how you feel, Rosemary. I am hooked also! lol... And to think I was a little reticent abot going on a cruise at all. I did it to please my wife who had wanted to go for a while. Now, I am the one telling her we should do another cruise this summer instead of flying to Europe. We already booked an inter-island Hawaiian cruise with NCL for the week of Christmas, too! :-)
We just got back from our Costa Mediterranea cruise and both my husband and I had a wonderful time. We had a beautiful room, the service was very good to excellent and we never had a hungry moment . We were always able to find something yummy to eat.
We chose the cruise because it had a tennis court and were warned before the cruise. The tennis court is what I called a cross between a tennis court and a ping pong table. My husband did attempt to play, had some fun and then played ping pong. We did play at Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic so hubby was happy. The gym is great.
We cruised with over 1600 Armenians so we danced to Armenian music, Italian music, Romantic music and only stayed at the disco for a couple of songs before we went to bed because we were very tired. We were there when it was just opening and there were only a few people dancing but it looked as if more were about to start.
I had followed this thread for awhile so we went thinking we would have a few problems but weren't going to get to upset over anything. We had no problems! The waiters and waitresses were all very good. Some were friendlier and some were a little more serious but all seemed to want to give us anything we wanted.
Our first cruise. We loved it and pland to go the Costa next time.
