Default cabin upgrades

I've read somewhere on this board about passengers being upgraded from inside cabin to balcony at no extra cost on a costa med cruise. Any similar stories out there? Can we bargain for a balcony when boarding, if they are available?

Denys: From what I am reading here, Costa is changing things around. So, why not try. When I was on the ship, you could not get an employee to spit on you if you were on fire. But in two months they turned this around into the cruise line they are supposed to be. Food and service are all of a sudden top notch. For the prices they are giving a week on this ship (price of a good dinner for two where I live), means they are not filling up the ship. So if the suites are there, ask for them. All they could say is no.

For a while on their website they had an offer that if you purchased an outside cabin, you got upgraded to a balcony. However, that was not their lowest fare. You could only take advantage of one offer. Their lowest fare offer did not include the outside to balcony upgrade offer.

However, if you are booked in a "Cat Guarantee (run of the ship)" category, it is possible to get bumped from inside to outside, but my experience has been that this is rare. Any bump from inside to outside is rare, but it does happen and it has happened to me.

We purchased a Catagory Guarantee and were assigned a deck one, inside cabin. This was the lowest fare. We were given a deck 7 inside which I think was better. As this was my first cruise,I have nothing to compare it with. We had no complaints tho.

We just booked the Mediterranea for April 4 in a category 1 inside. We received an complimentary upgrade to a category 4 obstructed view outside. Works for me!

Just returned on Sunday, 14 March 2004 from a cruise on the Costa Atlantica. We had a wonderful trip!! Do not believe all the negative messages you read about Costa. I asked over 50 fellow passengers on the trip and all said nothing but good things about the cruise. Everyone had a great time. There were many, many, passengers on our boat that were repeat Costa cruisers.

We booked a Category 1 inside cabin (cheapest) and were pleased when our tickets arrived. We were upgraded by Costa to a Category 4 outside view. We inquired on the boat about an upgrade to a balcony but they said no. Our cabin was every large by cruise boat standards.
