LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Costa Concordia list of missing passengers and crew currently stands at more than a dozen individuals. Among them are Barbara Heil and Gerald Heil of the United States. Eleven persons are confirmed dead, but only person has been identified. Italian officials released the list moments ago.
The Costa Concordia death toll remains at eleven persons. But only Sandor Feher, the 38 year old crew member from Hungary, has yet to be identified.
What good is a "list of missing and/or dead people" with no names on it? I want to know if they were passengers, crewmembers, where they were located, how the passed away (if they did). I realize some are missing - but what about names, and titles...

I would begin with my objection to Diane Sawyer on ABC news the other day. Not once but twice she referred to the Concordia mess as "The Carnival ship". Yes I know the overall parent company is CCL Plc.
The other day Princess was barred from docking at the Falkland Islands dues to a suspected norovirus. It was reported as a Princess ship. It was not reported as a Carnival ship, even though CCL is the parent company.
I tweeted to Micky Arison and ABC and posted to JH blog my objection to her "editorializing for effect". ABC = Disney.
My understanding is that the sailing originated on the 9th with stops along the way to pick up additional passengers. There must have been a muster drill during those 4 days prior to the incident. The scheduled drill for Saturday, it seems, was for the newer passengers.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong on this.
I don't think 4,000 passengers would have gotten off this vessel without substantial help from the crew. There was probably some crew who also panicked and fended for themselves. It was not fair to report what some passengers claim that the crew did nothing without pointing this fact out.

The reporting has been terrible at times due to statements made by passengers. That statement about the crew not knowing what to do, is the worst. People accept the statement as just that, without knowing the facts behind it. Those releasing the lifeboats first had to recieve an order to do it, even if they themselves knew they should. Each has their assigned duty as their part of the boat release, there are many aspects to it. It's not a one man operation, even if they had been cross trained to load a boat, release the riggings, drive the boat etc. I know all were in panic mode and didn't think of all this, that's understandable, but it's the statements of "they didn't know what to do" that gets me. Why has no one come forth and given credit to those lifeboat handlers? They got 4,000 people off in 2 hours! Someone knew what to do!
This one has a video of passengers in a blackout, and you hear (as I have been saying) announcements in Russian, (Spiceba) and Portuguese(Abrigado), Korean - and who knows what else.
The point is that these are in addition to the Italian, French, German, Spanish and English Costa always uses. How many languages were they using on this cruise?
No wonder there was bedlam - this is ship designd to be used by people who do not share a common language.

I think Filipino people (sure there was a lot of other nationalities) make a great job.

Liz, I heard that also on two seperate evenings both times by Diane Sawyer. They need to get that straight. I plan to stay up and watch the special tonight.

Funny you say that but on Costa Atlantica every announcement was made in 6 or 7 different languages. We were joking at the muster that if they do that during a real emergency we all be dead before they finish the announcements.
If they savage the ship, will anybody sail on her?

Personally having been on the Concordia the night it went down, I've been on a constant lookout for reports on the matter. I think the best I've found was here on Cruisemates. I'm wondering who wrote it.
One might be tempted to draw a few comparisons between the World Trade Centers and Costa Concordia.
The ship is about the same size as one of the Twin Towers.
Both sustained catastrophic damage.
Both had several hours to get everyone evacuated.
Both suffered from communications breakdowns.
The Costa ship was mostly submerged and laying on it's side, at night, with little light, surrounded by cold waters, off the coast of a tiny island with an even tinier town.
The Twin Towers were hit on a beautiful autumn morning, in the middle of New York City, with plenty of daylight.
The Twin Towers had many thousands of highly trained policemen, firemen, and emergency response workers, managed by the Mayor of New York, Police Commissioner of New York, Fire Chief of New York, Governor of New York, Federal Emergency Repsonse Organisations, etc to organize the evacuation.
The Costa Ship had 1,000 waiters and cabins stewards, apparently managed by nobody.
THe Costa Crew managed to get most everyone off the ship in just 2 hours, despite at least 5 differrent languages being spoken. In the end, the death toll will probably be a few dozen.
At the Twin Towers, with one language spoken, over 3,000 people didn't make it down the stairways in time and were lost.
All things considered, the Costa Crew did pretty well.

You have a perspective of the situation, no one here has.....if you feel up to sharing your thoughts, we would appreciate hearing them..of course, in due time. I hope your heart heals, from all you have seen, and been through.

I saw the 20/20 show last night and thought it made the whole cruise industry look bad. Not sure what there expectation was but the content as presented made it sound like taking a cruise is a bad idea. I thought they used broad brushes and failed to discuss the diligent work other cruise lines employ around safety.
I watched the 20/20 show ... grossly disappointing. Only half the piece was relevant with the other 20 minutes trying to paint cruisers and violent drunks with the the final ten minutes dedicted to JFK jr. Really, the piece on JFK jr. was so critical it had to air?
Sureley there was enough content to spend the entire hour on the Concordia.
I suppose while it is extremely relevant to us and other cruisers, it may not be relevant to the 20/20 audience at large.
I'm going to start a thread on the subject of drinking and violence. Will put it in all things cruising.

This is a report is a Conde nast piece where the author implies we need an "international body" to regulate cruise ships.
What will happen now?
In the end, the "flag states" still have the ultimate say on whether a ship and its crew are fit to sail, and their decisions are not subject to review by any international body. Marine safety advocates are hoping that the Costa Concordia accident might improve the current system. At a recent press conference in London, Christine Duffy, President and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association, urged the IMO to carefully evaluate the findings from the Costa Concordia investigation to ensure the cruise industry remains as safe as possible. Duffy said, "While there is a great deal still not known about this incident, all of our members recognize the seriousness of these events and want to ensure we apply the lessons learned from this tragic event."
The problem is that there is no international body to regulate anything. There is no international police force, for example. Interpol is only a tracking organization with no authority to regulate, arrest, fine or detain.
In the end regulation of international standards always comes down to individual nations who agree to the treaties. The U.S. Constitution has a provision that says we must abide by any treatey we sign (which is largely why we probably don't sign some treaties critics say we should sign, like the Kyoto agreement).
If there was an international police force Iran and North Korea probably wouldn't have nuclear power. But think about this - would you want an outside telling the U.S. what it has to do?

The reason the reporter was calling it a "Carnival" ship and not saying same for Princess, is that The Costa ships are built by the same designer shape and dimenions as what Carnival uses.. The shape and exterior dimenions are the same with the exception of the ships funnel and decor. As in Princess, they are a complete differnt design even though Carnival owns them.
So when other people see the ship first hand, they assume its a Carnival ship.
Same is true with auto makers, GM for example.. Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon XL and other body styles are same overall shape and platform but with differnt trim, Its all the same.
