Default Another question for past cruise line employees

As I mentioned in my below post, a friend and I both applied at a cruise line. I also saw a post about questions about HIV. My friend is HIV positive ( really, its not me...lol) But, will this be a problem. Do they ask at the medical exam? Can they discriminate? Especially if its NCL "AMERICA." I know that being HIV positive is considered a disability protected under the 1990 or 1992 discrimination act, but will that include jobs at sea?

Lakelandguy,

Most Cruise Lines are very strict when it comes to their required medical examinations. Its simple really. If an applicant / ex-crew has been diagnosed as "MEDICALLY UNFIT", regardless of the nature of his / her being unfit, shall not be allowed to board the ship. If the crew is already onboard but has been diagnosed as "medically unfit", he / she shall be repatriated the soonest time possible. If you think that this practice is discrimatory or the sort, you may want to check out the Maritime Law.

NCL America, under US Labor Laws, cannot legally test, enquire, or discriminate for HIV. Most other cruise lines require an HIV test before hire.

Although Disney Cruise Line is A U.S. company ... both ships are registered in Nassau, Bahamas. Please bear in mind that U.S. Labor Laws are different from the INTERNATIONAL MARITIME LAW.
