I'm a pro sound engineer in NYC and am looking into the possibility of working on a ship. I've mostly worked in clubs of varying sizes. Working a broadway style production with lav mics and live band would be no problem. I also understand the hours are long and the pay isn't great, but as a former airline employee, the tavel would be fun.
Any thoughts or advice on how to break in and who to work for first? How are the working conditions?
Thanks
Nevermind - I just got hired by Carnival 3 days after I submitted an on-line resume and cover letter.... Yeee haw!!! Can't wait - I'll be aboard the Valor or Victory.
I was going to say - that is what I did on ships, too, and I also had no problems getting hired every time I applied (3 different lines - no refusals).
And the pay isn't that bad either. Let us know how you like it.
I think I'll be placed on Carnival's Victory at first. It looks like the biggest adjustment for me will be dealing with music. As a New Yorker in the indie rock scene it'll be different having to listen to Copacabana over and over. But, the experience away from the rat race know as New York City will still be a nice change.
I'll keep you posted and let you know how I'm doing....
