Yep,they do have a day off while in port(don't know about their schedule while at sea)Our cabin steward was shopping at a store were we just happen to be darting in for the air conditioning(HOT!!) outside in St. Thomas.Gave her 30.00 dollars to shop with, and boy oh boy WHAT!!extra service did we get...chocoate covered strawberries, double the towel animals, and the most wonderful smile you can imagine.Very HARD working Great people.
Well, lets be more specific - it depends on your job. If you are part of the cruise staff (entertainers, etc) who have free run of the ship then you CAN fraternize with the passengers pretty much whenever you are not working. especially in port.
Crew-people, however, (waiters, room stewards, cooks, kitchen....) do not the same open policy, and they cannot fraternize while abord the ship. If you happen to run into one while in port you may fraternize all you please - they are off duty.
