lenght of contracts

I was wondering why a contract for a waiter/waitress is 10 months long with 2 off whereas that of members of the activities department is only 4 months long.

Also is there a way to get a longer contract? I mean longer than just 4-5 months?

Employees with longer contracts usually are from the South Pacific (Philipines/Indonesia) or Eastern Europe. The cruise lines require this length of contract because of the expense involved in flying employees to/from the ship.

The only benefit to longer contracts is USUALLY paid vacation is included.

Employees with shorter contracts are usually from the US/Canada.

For shorter contracts, there is no paid vacation.
