Internet?

So I want to do blogs and stuff and just curious how available internet is on the cruise ships and at what rate to employee's?

I'll be on the norwegian star if that helps?

Just trying to get a feel for how available it will be or wont be. Can I use the internet an hour a day without spending my whole pay check?

there's wifi in the crew area - It should be less than .15 cents (US) a minute. There will also be a crew internet cafe w/computers. There's also wifi at pretty much every port you'll be at (if you're going over this summer - Alaska?). Like any pay per minute internet situation, if you have your text ready to go, it makes the upload a lot faster. You might also want to look into tethering your cell phone to your laptop.

So for April i'll be going to Mexico and May i'll be going up to Vancouver, But will a cell phone work w/ tethering? Wouldn't that be roaming and cost a stupid amount? If not i'm definitely interested..

I tethered when I had a Treo phone thru AT&T - if I was in home airspace, there wasn't any roaming fees . . . which included St Thomas, San Juan and any US turnaround port. Check and see if your provider has an unlimited data plan and coverage in the areas you'll be in. And yes, you do have to be careful or you'll get nailed with the roaming if you're not watching the signal.

I have an iPhone now and can quickly check to see if there's any accessable wifi in the area, and then open the laptop and go (or just use the iPhone).

As soon as you get on the ship, you'll have tons of help and advice from your fellow crewmembers . . trust me on that one :D You'll be working with a diverse international group who use services like Skype to keep in touch with their friends and family back home. They'll know where to find the best free or cheap places.

Enjoy Alaska - I did two summers there . . it's a stunning run!
