Default A question for those who have worked on the Pride of America

My grandson started on the Pride of America last week with his Coast Guard training and this week with his actual work. His hours are 7pm to 4am, which he is pretty used to having. But he said that each day this week after a couple of hours sleep he is being woken for a drill or meeting/training - but not for his safety job.

My question is will this keep up for him like this or is it because he is new on the ship?

I would love to be able to tell him that he will be able to start getting more straight hours of sleep.

I see that a lot have looked at this but no replies. Maybe because you have not worked on the Pride of America. But maybe if you have worked on another NCL ship you may have gone thru the same thing. Or even on another line.

He had a bad end of week last week as while moving a pan of oil the ship bumped and he ended up accidently pouring some of the oil on his had, medical was able to help and his burn was worse thatn he has ever had before but not horrible and after a couple of days doing only prep is back to cooking.

I hope someone will answer me. I don't care if it is an answer that I won't like but and answer just the same.

Nancy,

I would "expect" that since he is working the night shift and most of the training occurs during the day he will not have a lot of consecutive sleep.

I know in my younger corporate days I worked the night shift in Information Technology. I was constantly required to attend meetings during the day.

Cruise ship work isn't easy and many people have complained about the hours and left the job because they couldn't and or wouldn't take it.

The best thing I would say to him is that if he can stick with it he will get promoted and be put on a better shift.

Take care,
Mike

Mike, thanks for the reply. We know that not as many work the shift he does and that of course the drills and meeting would be during the day, but his first working week he had at least one or the other happenning every day Mon - Fri. And that seems excessive.

We talked with him this evening and this week he sounds better. I told him that as often as he can to get off the ship if only for 15 minutes. I think also that part of the problem with him is being without at least windows to look out every once in a while.

I will let him know that it is possible to get better hours the longer he is there. Thought working the night shift does not bother him that much.

That is completly normal and will be done within the first maybe the second week...He is working the Night shift...so it is a bit tougher but American Cruiselines have certain Training protcols... After he have completed this protocols he is done with that...
And there mostly about how to interact on board or how to react in a fist fight etc...on Royal Carribean they said if you get in a fist fight do not hit back protect yourself...because the company first fires you then asks questions:-)

I also would tell your son becareful with Alcohol...on every cruiseship is a zero tolerance policy... so if he would do a small stupid thing while he is lets say a bit drunk...he will get breathealized and will be fired immediatly from the Captain if he is over the limit same as on the street driving...
It is just company policy

Thunderbolt, thanks for the reply. I was hoping that the meeting part especially would be ending sooner rather than later.

Thanks Thunderbolt. I am sure he will be fine too. It is hard on him as he is 20 and this is the first time he has ever been away from family so it is hard for him and never been away from his Mom (our daughter) for more that 3 weeks.

We all tell him how proud we are of him and that he can do it whenever we get to talk with him.
