Harding Brother turned me down to lack of experience

Hi i have just recently applied to harding bros for the first time as a duty free sales assistant.

First of all i have 2 and a half years of combined retail experience, i have a valid stcw - 95 qualification which includes the (ENG 1) medical certificate, i also have a seaman's discharge book.

Three days after applying i receive a reply which says "Unfortunately, despite the strength of your candidacy, we feel overall that other candidates had
more relevant experience".

I phoned the recruitment number and spoke to a lady who told me that i should get more experience, now i am not really sure how much more experience i need and in what field of work.

Also correct me if i am wrong but harding brothers recruitment criteria says candidates must have a minimum of two years retail experience.

If anyone could advise me on this i would appreciate it.
