Default Best IT Qualifications/Experience?

I'm an IT student and aspiring crew member. I want to work in IT on a cruise ship.

Does anyone know the best qualifications, certifications and jobs (for experience) that would help with this?

yeah - basically, just know windows and networking. Its a little bit of everything, but you should know how to keep computers connected, troubleshoot software, eradicate viruses, etc.

I would read up a little about satellite Internet connectivity and also cell-phone data services by satellite.

It really depends on what IT position you are looking for. If you are looking at working the Internet Cafe you will need knowledge in Windows and Mac OS. Basic networking, connectivity, applications, and IP.

If you are looking at being an IT officer for the ship then you will need a wider skill set. Windows Server, TCP/IP, Networking (CCNA or other Industry Certification), UNIX, Point of Sale (POS) and Remote Systems Connectivity. You will also need an applications support background and MS Office applications. Point of Sale is important. It's the revenue generator for the company.

A minimum of an AA degree in Computer Science will be required unless you have a lot of other qualifications and experience. A BS in Computer Science would be even better. Microsoft certifications such as: MCSA and MCSE would be of great benefit. Previous experience is also a must for most higher level positions.

BTW: Pay isn't that great but it's a nice way to see the world.

Take care,
