Default Considering working on a cruise ship, advice request.

I am hoping to get some advice on working on a cruise ship, there seems to be so much conflicting information on the internet, so if I can hear it straight from the horses mouth that would be great. My questions are:

1) I am looking to work in an engineering role, 3rd engineer or refrigeration engineer. I am well qualified and experienced on land but have no ship experience as yet. I see a lot of the salaries posted are shown monthly. I have heard that it is run on a 10 week on and 10 week off rotation, now do you only get the stated monthly salary when your on board or can it be assume do the salary is x 12 for the year even when your not on board?

2) Are the positions self employed or employed?

3) As a U.K resident do I have to pay tax on my earnings. I have heard you don't but I have read a HMRC statement that says you do, is there some way around this?

Thanks for any help any one can give with these questions.

Dave
