Who has the best or worst food?

Hi,

I'm a foodie. Therefore, one of my criterias for picking a cruise ship is the quality of the food. So far, I've only been on one cruise on the Carnival Spirit to the Mexican Riviera.
I was very pleased with the quality of the food onboard. The dining room offered very good gourmet food. The mushroom and goat cheese pizza was excellent. And for the most part, the buffet offerings were tasty.

In your opinion, which cruise line offers the best and/or worst food, and why? Is their a particular dish you especially liked or loathed?

I'm trying to decide on which cruise ship to take next. I'm considering an Alaska cruise onboard either the Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Mercury, Coral Princess, Island Princess and the Sapphire Princess.

Thanx for your input!

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

In my opinion the Carnival Spirit -class ships have had the best. Been on the Pride and going on the Miracle soon. Royal Caribbean was OK, Princess was good, and Celebrity was good too. Celebrity and Princess I think were comparable to eachother so either way your Alaska cruise will be great!

I absolutely LOVE the Roast Pumpkin soup on the Carnival ships!

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

I'm so glad to hear that someone else has had a good experience on the Carnival cruiseships (the Spirit in particular). We absolutely looooooved sailing on the Spirit. Granted, it was our first cruise, and we have nothing else to compare it to. I also loved the pumpkin soup as well as the escargot. I don't think I ate anything there that I thought was bad. ...Oh, yeah, I thought the chicken caesar salad served at the Pizza area was a bit bland.

Our table of three would each order four different entrees and switch the plates around so we could have a taste of everything. We did the same thing with desserts and appetizers. My mother-in-law actually ordered a second plate of the jumbo shrimp appetizer so she wouldn't have to share. Each evening we finished our meal with a cappuchino doctored up with cocoa that our assistant server would concoct for us. The service was absolutely wonderful.

I thought that our next cruise should be on a different ship (so we could eventually compare all the different ships and decide which one was our favorite). But, maybe I should stick with a "good thing". The Carnival Spirit has a great price, lots of balconys, and really good food. (All the things I want in a cruise ship).

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

The food on most cruise ships is of buffet quality. I have found the food on Celebrity to be of higher quality in regard to the mass market cruise ships. Celebrity's presentation is also superior and the service is excellent. My wife and I have sailed on Celebrity, Princess, HAL, RCCL, Crystal, Raddison, and Cunard. The luxury ships do have overall better quality, but not much above Celebrity.

I've been on Carnival several times, and found the food to be wonderful. Even the service is great. Princess British Isles is coming up next month, and I've actually heard the food is awful. I hope what I've heard is wrong!!

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

We have been on two cruises and the Disney Magic had much better food than RCI's Majesty of the Seas. More selection on the buffets and in the dining room and better quality. The only exception was the Majesty had a more extensive kids menu than Disney - go figure.

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

Well I can tell you that of all the cruises I have taken, the worst cuisine was aboard Royal Olympic's Daphne (long time ago) and Carnival's Holiday. That one cruise has made me decide to never sail with Carnival again - it was pretty bad.

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

The worst food and presentation of food was on the Voyager of the Seas. We loved the food on all of our Carnival Cruises., Fascination, Inspiration, Destiny and especially the Legend. The food on the Celebrity Zenith however was the best...

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

RCL quality of food has gone down quite a bit. I just cancelled my October cruise partly due to the poor quality.

Hi,

CELEBRITY by a landslide......IMO.

We've sailed Princess and Celebrity; Princess was quite all right....but
Celebrity was TOPS.
As a near-retired TA, I can vouch for that line's reputation as regards food; ( qualityt,
quantity, service, etc...)

Happy Buffet

Celebrity definitely has the best food by far, especially on the Millennium. Their desserts are incredible! I also love their fresh pasta stations during lunch. Royal Caribbean has good food as well, I love their vegetarian selections.

I just got back about half a week ago from Alaska on the Celebrity Mercury. The food was incredible, and the service couldn't have been better. I highly recommend it.

Glad to hear the positive rating for Merc. We'll be on her in Sept. Celeb is our favorite--Royal is very basic/mediocre but we were very pleasantly surprised on Brilliance in March-- very good food all over--& excellent food & service in both Chops & Portofino.

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

We just got back from 7 days on the Enchantment OTS and the food was excellent! When they stretched the ship the changed the Windjammer to a food court like set-up. No lines, fresh food and great variety. We loved it so much we went there for dinner twice which is something we never even considered doing before. We have sailed on the Disney Magic 8/04 (also very good food) and the Majesty OTS 4/05 (so-so food).

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

I would have to agree that the nicest presentation of food on the medium priced ships was Celebrity Line.

We sailed out of Norfolk this past May on a Bermuda cruise. Our Cabin was on the lowest deck of the Horizon, but we had a great table for six. The ship is being chartered for 6 months(Europe) after completing the Bermuda cruises. Can't say enough about the friendly crew, great Buffets, dining in the Restaurant. Bermuda is still quite expensive, but very enjoyable.

We sailed Silver Seas in January(10 days), and found the food and service not much different than Celebrity. In fact the very identifiable hamburgs served from the grill on the Whisper were identical to the ones on the grill of the Horizon( there are points on them like a star). Always fresh, never dry, and always good. Nice to know now that we could have ordered gratis the caviar on the Whisper, plus special orders. We were never informed by anyone, including the Maitre' d that special orders were welcomed. I think my biggest disappointment was the night Dover Sole Meuniere was on the dinner menu. One bite told me it was frozen. I asked and was told, "yes, it is frozen." The experience was definitely sad. Desserts no better than Celebrity, just fancier. They have also stopped serving Moet Chandon champagne except as an extra charge like the very premium wines.

Re: Who has the best or worst food?

The very best food I've had was on a recent one-week cruise aboard Carnival Valor.
So innovative and creative. You can tell a big part of their budget goes into cuisine.

The worst coffee: Princess. The worst food: For me personally, RCI Enchantment of the Seas. The majoroity of complaints I get come from Royal Caribbean passengers who felt the food was poor on their cruise.

karessamom September 14th, 2005 01:15 PM

Our very first cruise was on Carnival Conquest and We thought the food was fantastic! I thought the wild mushroom soup was to die for! as well as many other dishes! I do wish however that they would do more dishes without alcohol.--that was my only complaint they did have dishes where they cooked out the alcohol which was great but there were others--especially the deserts that had uncooked out alcohol that i would have tried had it not been for that. Grand Mariner souffle for one--i'd heard that it was really good until i found out how much alcohol was in it and refused to try it. The presentations were great--the breafast menus and buffet could be varied a little more but other than that--No complaints what so ever! Food was also HOT for hot and cold for cold (i'd heard complaints in the past of food arriving cold)

Best Food - Celebrity

We've sailed with several lines and whilst the food has been good on them all, Celebrity has got to be the best. From the 2" steaks that you can cut with a spoon to the miniature burgers and pizza's offered in the Casino in the early hours, it's all superb.

Drooling just thinking about it!

Service was also fantastic

Mike M September 24th, 2005 03:31 PM

In my last five cruises the food has to be rated as: This is in a three year period.

1. Celebrity
2. Carnival Legend
3. NCL
4. Royal Caribbean

Celebrity wins because of overall consistency from buffet, dining room, specialty restaurant to room service.

Carnival was only Carnival Legend but their dining room was equal to Celebrity and their buffet was the best I've seen.

NCL food on my last cruise was overall very good with just a couple of mediocre items.

On Voyager and Serenade the food was good but little was excellent and a number of things were mediocre to poor and I sent a number of things back. I haven't sent that many things back on any other cruise line.

Take care,
Mike

Of the lines we've been on, I'd put them in this order:

Carnival - BEST

Holland America - VERY GOOD (great service!)

RCCL - FAIR

NCL - HORRIBLE (will not cruise with them again, food was THAT bad)

of course, to each his own! :D

Best cruise lines for food

Interesting to hear so many raves for Celebrity and, in particular, the Mercury. Our experience was the opposite - dinners were very good but the lunch buffet and desserts were mediocre. It was the service that put us off - very impatient waiter who sighed if you asked him for the second time for a cup of tea and got the orders wrong and never did bring things that people asked for. Must have been a glitch cruise.

We went back to HAL after that and though the food isn't quite as good as it was before 2002 it is still excellent.

Diana F November 2nd, 2005 02:49 AM

We've only cruised Cunard, so our experience is very limited. However, I am picky (at least my DH says so!!) and I've not had any bad meals. Most of the food is excellent.

Would be interested to hear others who have cruised both Celebrity and Cunard, which did you prefer? The Constellation is doing cruises around the Baltic from Dover (England) which I quite fancy!

cookie1207 November 17th, 2005 12:18 PM

For food taste and quality our top five
1.Celebrity
2.Princess
3.Cunard
4.NCL
5.RCCL

Our least favorite food(do to inconsistant quality) is Costa.

satchiesmom June 23rd, 2006 03:13 PM

We have cruised with Celebrity and Holland America. We thought Celebrity couldn't be beat until our last cruise with HAL. We were surprised to find that the food was superior to that which we had on our last Celebrity cruise, and the service was far better than we ever had on Celebrity. The last time we were on the Century we found the angling for tips from the waitstaff on the last couple of nights to be especially annoying.

dottiel July 26th, 2006 10:12 AM

We also have to say the food on the Spirit was fantastic! Granted this was our first cruise but we enjoy our meals and good food.

We never sent anything back or had anyone refuse to eat something that was served/chosen. We sailed with my elderly mom (78 at the time) and two children, ages then were 6 and 3. Everyone was happy EVERY time!

Hoping the Conquest holds the same pleasures and some suprises!!!

gambitscuba July 30th, 2006 05:25 PM

I just got back from Sailing the Infinity and the food was marvelous... I am an excessively picky eater, but i could find something each night on the menu that satisfied me to the fullest, the Tiaramisu (spelling?) was exquisite. The 2 corn soups they served were So delicious i asked for seconds of both...

I find sailing RCI during Holidays actually gives you better food. I have never had a bad RCI experience, however the filet mignon is in my experience always been tough... and their deserts leave something to be desired. I don't like the fact they switched to the dining room lunch menu always the same, sort of boring...

The buffets on both are comparable (but chicken parmigiana on Celebrity... is not what I am used to) Both Good with some superb choices and some not so superb choices.

I am not a fan of the Carnival Ecstasy's dining experience, escargot was over done, Steaks were always tough and most of the time overcooked... and serving baby back ribs in the fine dining room is a bit strange... delicious but strange. None of their soups tickled my fancy they tasted watered down.

so Best to Worst

1. Celebrity by FAR
2. RCI
3. Carnival Ecstasy (shudders in remembrance)

HOWEVER for the best Chocolate Ice Cream on the High Seas...
Royal Caribbean Blows the other two away... just in case you want to make your cruise decisions based on Chocolate Ice Cream
