Default Touring the Kitchen

Did I read somewhere on this website that a person could take a tour of the kitchen?
I love the food network and would be interested in seeing how they prepare for all the guests.

Hi gmann,

Every cruise we've been on has had a galley tour, but it's been offered when there's nothing going on there! I'd guess that they don't want people's "germs" in the food .

Before the tour they will tell you the interesting stats about preparing food for all of us.

Sometimes there will be an "ice carver" or "vegie carver" showing off his skills.

I've always enjoyed the galley tours.

Didn't do a galley tour on the Sun but on both the Star and Caribbean they had a demonstration prior to the tour. On the Star it was a comedy with the head chef, head waiter and matre'd, plus some of the serving staff. And it was so funny. On the Caribbean it was the head chef and matre'd and 2 couples from the audience and they prepared the same dish. Very informative.

I don't remember even seeing the cooking show/galley tour on the Sun but we may have just missed it.

Going thru the galley you see where everything is prepared and there are carved veggies and fruit on display. Plus at the end you can buy the Princess cookbook.

I asked about a galley tour on Destiny and I was told that due to security after 9/11 that tours were no longer offered. I really wanted to see it.

Hi dina,

Every ship we've sailed has offered a galley tour. Are you sure they didn't misunderstand and thought you asked about a bridge tour?

As far as I know, that's the only part of the ship's tour they've cancelled since 9/11.

I was very specific about asking for galley tour. And it wasn't in any of the capers either. Perhaps I'll get to take a tour on some other ship. I would really enjoy that.

Holland America ships now have culinary arts centers where hands on cooking classes and food prep lectures are offered. Great fun for those so inclined!

Yea Dina,
we just got off the destiny and we asked for a gallery tour and a bridge tour, and we were told since 9/11 that has changed. So sad..but you can always watch on the discovery channel, they got good stuff on the making of cruises..

Hi Scott

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm not nuts. hahahaha Maybe next time I'll find a cruise that does the galley tours but I loved being on Destiny.

Discovery channel is what got me interested in seeing the galley in person.

Does anyone know if galley tours are available on the Carnival Glory? I cruised on the Glory about a month ago and just want to see if I missed the galley tours

Hi Dina,

We had previously gone on the galley tours prior to 9/11, and they WERE very interesting...it really is a shame that they no longer offer those, it was quite amazing to see what they went thru to prepare so much food for so many people.....

The same thing happened when we were driving up to Hoover Dam. Fortunately before we drove all that way, we found out they were no longer giving tours for the same reason...we rented a helicopter and flew over to see, but the cost hardly justified that trip!!!

It sure is a different world now...

Default another possible reason galley tour discontinued

While also on Destiny, I spoke with CD and asked why galley tour was no longer offered. In so many words his polite explaination was that Carnival was proud of their ability to control Noro Virus and that eliminating the tour helped with the situation. Logical enough answer I suppose.

Default Link to Destiny photos including galley & bridge tour

I posted some of our Destiny July & June 2001 photos of the gallery-they include a few of the galley tour & bridge. In galley Mostly a garnish station, walk thru of kitchen, could see on wall waiters uniforms, plating photos, ice carver and exit at end to towel demonstations.

Bridge at the time- walked by and saw "quarteres" of some of the officers, bridge navigation, the view from the overhang etc. Spoke with the crew.
Alas I believe these tours are no longer offered for security and I think health control reasons.

On the MSC Lirica in Dec one night for the midnight buffet it started with a tour of the galley, thru one side of one of the dining rooms.. Then in to the other side of the dining room for the buffet.

We didn't go but tablemates did an they said it was very nice. Lots of displays of fancy bread, fruit and veg.
