Default Semi-Formal? What is it?

I have dresses from dances that were "semi-formal" but what is the actual differnce between semiformal and formal? Would a big poofy prom type dress be to formal for the formal nights? Or should I just stick to a straight sparkly dress? I would like to wear the prom type dress but I dont want to over due it. Will I feel out of place in a prom dress?

I vote the straight sparkly dress for formal night -- think simple and elegant, in my opinion (and from what I've seen)

Hi CC,
I have to also agree with Harry, I just prefer the simple "sparkly" type dresses myself, but feel free to wear the prom dress for the formal nights, you would be fine either way. Just wear what looks and feels right for you, will will see a bit ov everything on those formal nights too. You may also want to go and have a professional photo done on one of those nights :-)

Becca,

"I have dresses from dances that were "semi-formal" but what is the actual differnce between semiformal and formal? Would a big poofy prom type dress be to formal for the formal nights? By proper etiquette, "formal" means that genlemen wear either tuxedos or dinner jackets and that ladies wear either evening gowns or formal cocktail dresses. When cruising became popular, most cruise lines relaxed their standard of "formal" slightly to admit dark business suits for gentlemen as a concession to the reality that most gentlemen did not own formal attire. "Semiformal" means standard business attire -- a business suit or a coat and tie for gentlemen and a cocktail or business dress for ladies.

The prom dress would be very appropriate for formal evenings, but not for semiformal evenings. The straight sparkly dress probably would be appropriate for either.

Norm.
