Is a white dinner jacket considered gauche on formal night? I'm taking a cruise with eight or nine formal nights, partly in the tropics and partly in summer. I'd like to bring more than one coat for variety, but am not sure whether white is in or out. I don't recall seeing many worn on other cruises and almost never at formal dinners on land.
My husband takes a white dinner jacket when we cruise in the spring and summer
and will usually wear it one formal evening and the black dinner jacket the other.
There are usually several other men in white jackets. You certainly will not be out
of place. Its really just a matter of personal preference.
Rereading your post, I'm perplexed by the mention of "eight or nine formal nights" since that many formal nights would be very unusual unless you are combining several itineraries back to back for an extended cruise. You might verify that all of those nights really are formal rather than semiformal.
Bernie is off on a 40 night cruise on the Marco Polo.

My husband has a beautiful off-white jacket. What type of shirt and tie would he wear with it? Also, my son, age 11, has a brand new off white suit. Would that be okay for formal night or should I buy him a black one???
Bernie-wish I were on your cruise......There is nothing more stately, elegant and fantastic, than a man in a white dinner jacket. Enjoy the looks!! Be dapper!
I love a man in a white dinner jacket- reminds me of James Bond- very dapper with black pants, black tie - straight or bow, and a matching white shirt.
Note that a "dinner jacket" is NOT a sport jacket. Rather, a "dinner jacket" a formal jacket, usually with satin lapels, that's worn with black tuxedo pants, pleated shirt (either wing or turn-down collar), bow tie, and vest or cummerbund. Although it technically is not called a tuxedo, you'll get the picture if you think of it as essentially a tuxedo with a white jacket rather than a black jacket.
As far as your son is concerned, the white suit probably will be fine if your cruise is either in the tropics or in the summer. I would not recommend spending money on a dark suit for the cruise unless he'll have other occasions to wear it, though. It's much less expensive to rent a tuxedo outfit for him. Most tuxedo rental places do offer a "cruise package" that includes the jacket, pants, shoes, two shirts, a vest and matching tie, and a cummerbund and matching tie for $85 or so. The rental is, of course, for the duration of the cruise.
That looks so handsome. What kind of shirt and tie do you have on. Is this a white jacket, or a "real" dinner jacket with satin lapels. This looks just like something my hubby would love!
Gee..what a nice compliment. Thanks! Mine is a dinner jacket, not just a white sports coat. The shirt is a tuxedo shirt.. pleats and all, but wearing the vest as I do, it would be pretty easy to just wear a white dress shirt.
