Default Formal, Smart Casual, Casual?

I've been reading these boards and have gone through all my cruise materials, but I still don't see a definitive answer on what's appropriate, so I'm going to throw out what I think and you guys can confirm? I'm going on a 7-day western caribbean cruise on RCI next week.

Formal nights
Him - Dark suit (as he does not own a tux)
Me - Knee-length black cocktail dress and plain long black dress (not too dressy)

Smart casual
Him - sport coat, nice shirt and slacks
Me - Sleeveless, knee-length dressy sundress

The rest of the nights
Him - golf shirt and khakis or slacks
Me - Sundress or slacks and a nice shirt

Any thoughts? I don't want to be overdressed, but don't want to be a slob either.

You are right on target - what you have listed you put you where you want to be - not overdressed and not a slob either!! Have a great trip!

Ramita,
Yes, thats exactly the type of clothes we take too, when there is "formal", "semi formal", and "casual". You should both be just fine with packing those clothes, enjoy the cruise.

What ship?

actually hubby could get away without the sports coat - "smart" or "resort" casual is basically an attempt by the cruise line to avoid people wearing jeans & t-shirts into the dining rooms. The guideline used to be wear something that you would wear to a nice restaurant in your home town. A nice silk , oxford or polo shirt with a nice pair of pants (like Docker's would be fine) your choices are great, how about adding a bit of sparkle to your long black dress with a wrap or shawl?? I always go for sundresses and flat sandals for casual dressing - personally so much easier to throw on a dress instead of pants & a shirt!

I actually have a black silk shawl with black beads dangling from it that I am taking with me.

Thanks for all the feedback! Only a few more days to go...

To whoever asked, I will be on the Nordic Empress. My first cruise, my husband's 5th.
