Default Military Dress for formal nights???

My husband is active duty in the Airforce. As many of you may know, each branch has their own military Dress uniform. The Airforce Dress uniform is dark blue pants, with a ligh blue dress shirt, and a dark blue jacket with patent leather shoes.

Instead of buying or renting a tux, would this be acceptable for the formal night aboard ship? Have you ever seen anyone wearing their military dress for formal nights?

Thanks!
Christy

On One of our cruises we did have a neighbor who was in the Army and he wore his dress uniform and it was quite dashing. Very handsome and fit in quite well. Char

It is not only acceptable, but is encouraged.

It's always proper for a member of the armed forces who is on active duty to wear the appropriate uniform to a social function. Uniform regulations for the armed forces basically stipulate that the uniform should correspond to the dress prescribed for civilian personnel. Here's a rough equivalence chart.

>> Formal ("black tie") -> "Mess Dress" or "Dinner Dress" (with miniature medals, if applicable)

>> Semiformal -> "Service Dress" (with ribbons, if applicable)

>> Casual (Smart Casual, Resort Casual, etc.) -> "Summer" or "Winter" Uniform (with ribbons, if applicable)

Note that military personnel wear "Full Dress" uniforms (with large medals) only on ceremonial occasions.

Norm.

Thanks so much everyone!

I am so excited.... I LOVE seeing him in his military dress uniform! He is a firefighter, so he usually comes home smelling of smoke and fuel....

Thanks also for the civilian equivilancy chart Norm! That is very helpful. My husband does not have any whites, though.

Thanks again!
Christy

A young couple who looked a bit uneasy in his uniform drew applause as he entered the Capts reception.

Christy,

What is a cover?

Any hat that is part of a military uniform (worn indoors only if one is bearing arms).

Cover....point being - - don't bother taking one if you are wearing your uniform only to formal night, at sea. They are hell to pack.

Don,

As a former naval officer, I never had any problem packing covers. So-called "barracks caps" don't get crushed, even in a sea bag, if stuffed full of (preferably clean...) socks.

Military Dress? Yummy.... If your husband wears this, you better hold on tight! (better yet, bring a bat to beat away the ladies!!) Nothing better looking than a man in formal Military attire... :-)

Back in the days of old, we would berth next to the Leonardo di Vinci in Naples. On occasion we would put on our choker whites and wander aboard. Made for some interesting evenings.
