Default Cell Phones?

This is probably a stupid question, but since I have never been on a cruise before, Im curious. Can you use your cellphone while on the cruise or when it ports in Mexico?

Mine seemed to work everywhere, although when a voice said I was being transferred to an international operator, I hung up. Even in the middle of the ocean, I got the voice, otherwise I got whoever I was calling. Left it off so I wouldn't get what I'll bet are very expensive calls.

If you think cell phones in restaurants are a pain in the neck, just wait until breakfast the last morning. Everyone is on theirs checking on transportation, airline connection for telling Aunt Gertrude that you are calling from a ship.

Clarification may be in order... there are 3 or 4 standards for cell phones worldwide, so yours may or may not work, depending upon the system in use at your destination. My phone is GSM (Voicestream, Cingular operate using GSM) and my connections in Mexico were amazing. Also what was interesting was that inbound calls were not charged to me, since inbound calls don't get charged in Mexico. If I'd known that beforehand I would have been sending SMS's telling everyone to call me rather than my calling them!

Hi -
Just an fyi - I just called T-Mobile to find out if my Nokia phone would work on my Caribbean cruise next week [Carnival Destiny May 4 - woo hoo!!!!] and was told that my particular model will not work. So probably it's best for you to double check with your carrier to be sure. Hopefully it will work for you, as it's certainly the cheapest and easiest way.
