Default Carry-on size limitations for ship

Are they pretty strict about this? I was thinking about about using my old bookbag as the carry-on. You think this will be a problem with Carnival?

If it does not fit thru the scanner (which is the same size of airport scanners) you will not be allowed to carry it on. Carnival size states 11 X 17" but slightly larger will fit thru.

The third dimension is usually the length. As long as the width and depth is 11x17 your good to go. Doesn't matter how long it takes to get through the machine as long as the width and height (depth) are within the range. I've used a duffle bag that was definitely longer than 17 inches.
