Gosh, that is a loaded question.

First, you need the tip money unless you are going to put it on your ship account and pay with a charge card.

You will need money to tip the porters, tour director, taxi driver and so on. If you are flying you don't need to worry about parking. If you are driving, you may need money to pay for that as well. I seem to remember my last port not taking charges.

As for the rest.... It really depends on how much shopping you plan on doing. If you have cash in Mexico you can get some really good deals. The American dollar is very valuable there so you can bargain the prices down.

My best suggestion is just to make a budget, bring that much with you and charge the rest.

I have never spent that much but I cruise just to sightsee. Take your money in travelers checks. You will be protected if they get lost and if you don't spend it all, no big deal, you can use them anywhere.

How much is always a personal Q. It depends on a # of factors:

1. tips
2. how much alcohol you drink
3. do you like to gamble
4. will you be going shopping
5 will you want to buy the little extras -- photos etc.
6 will you want a massage / hair style on board
7 excursions

Bring a credit card just in case; most people under estimate how much they'll need.

Have fun! You're on vacation.

Am I correct in assuming that alcohol, extra food, photos, tips and carnival excursions can go on my sign and sail card and then credit card? But, I will need cash for extra tips, parking, non-carnival excursions, shopping at ports, food at ports and gambling??

Also, can you cash a traveler's check on the ship?

Thanks for your help!

The sail and sign cards are wonderful. You can do just about everything on the ship with no cash required. You will get an itemized bill your last night. Look it over to make sure all is correct though. I sailed with Carnival and did not check it out close enough and was over charged for the tips but did not notice it until I got home. My kids were to be $5 each a day not $10 because they were under 12.

You can bring traveler checks on board with you and cash them at the pursers desk. Bring small bills with you though for tips. You will need them.

Besides our S&S card we are bringing with us $1000-1500 in cash. For our 7 day cruise and 2 nights after in SJ. I think on our last cruise we spent $1000 on the ship in drinks and shopping but we had 4 at sea days, they will get ya!

That's just us...
