Default Teen Boys on formal night

Are dress slacks and a shirt and tie ok for teen age boys or do they need to wear a jacket? Ages 14& 17 Thanks

Hi SSCA,
No, nice shirt and dress pants are fine for boys that age. If they have jackets, go ahead and pack them, but if not, I wouldn't go out and buy some.

I agree with Donna my son, 15 was able to borrow a blue sport jacket from a friend and he enjoyed wearing it on the formal nights, but it was not required. He wore the standard teen dress clothes, dockers, with golf type shirts or ss dress shirts. Most nights he changed after dinner before goin to hang out with his on board friends.

have a great time!

that's fine. You might want to consider a blazer for the older one, with things like Senior Banquets and graduation coming in the future, he will have the need for a blazer, that is if he has stopped growing- it would be an investment piece for him to build upon. just a thought.

Just keep in mind that if you go on a ship with an alternative restaurant, they might require a jacket. Last April both of my boys were sent back to their cabin for theirs. It wasn't a formal night onboard so I didn't make them wear the jacket, just the shirt and tie. The M'D wouldn't let them in. They were 14 and 16 at the time.

I think a jacket is a more formal look, and therefore appropriate for formal night. When my son was a teen, I used to buy blazers for him at a very nice resale shop. There was a private school nearby that required navy blazers, so there was always a good supply.

Hi! I'm a senior in high school and I am going to be leaving for a cruise to the caribbean in a few weeks. I was wondering if I should take my prom dress (it is pretty fancy) or will I be over dressed in it? I also have a very nice dress (not prom) that goes just below the knees. Which should I take? Thanks

Hi Cowgirl - a lot depends upon which cruise line you are going on. Some are fancier than others, which one are you going on? How fancy is fancy? If its a real "ballgown" type dress then i would leave it at home and pack your dressy dress. If it is a simple, gown with some sparkle or beading then it would be fine.
The trend in cruising is away from the fancy frou-frou ball gowns.

i've got the same prob. as you Cowgirl! I spent a LOT of money on my prom dress and want to wear it again, its very poofy and very elegant.. i'm taking it, dont care what any one else thinks, the only thing i'm worried about is how to pack it!

megan,do you have a garment bag to pack in? If so then hang up your gown, cover it with the bags you get from the dry cleaners, pack it last. If you don't have a garment bag, then again use the dry cleaners bag, pack your gown last, hang it up as soon as you can. If it gets totally squished you might want to have laundry services press it for you.

l beth - "cute" come on mom, how many 17yr old young men want anything that remotely resembles cute??? My 17 yr old son would not wear suspenders, a nice dress belt would be a better choice imo.

Megan

My daughter wore her prom dress and looked fine. She fell in love with it and was glad she had a chance to wear it more than once. I saw quite a few young ladies who looked like they were wearing their prom dresses too.

Nothing's wrong with suspenders for a teenage boy, IF he likes them. But you asked if it would be too "nerdy." According to my two boys, ages 15 & 17, the answer is a resounding YES! 17 is old enough to decide how he wants to dress. Let him choose to wear them or not. I tell my boys, formal night means "real" shoes, dress pants, dark coat and tie. The rest is up to them.
