Call me crazy, but I like to bring a variety of eye shadows, lipsticks, polishes, etc. on a trip. Rather than have a jumble to dig through in a makeup bag or bringing a big traditional makeup case, I use a flat, transparent plastic organizer case ($4) that I bought in a home improvement store. It's meant for organizing nails, bolts, etc. but the compartments are perfect for most makeup items if you get the organizer that you can move the dividers around. The tricky part is finding one deep enough to take the larger shadow and blush compacts. They usually can fit in an angle. I put all my makeup, extra contacts, medicine, safety pins and odds and ends in it. It's flat, light and keeps everything clean and easy to find. Since all my jewelry is costume (don't need velvet linings, etc.), I also use a small organizer for it as well, separated by color scheme.

Great idea, Lauri! Sounds a little more "luggage proof" than the way I usually carry my make-up, too. Thanks for the tip.

I use them for home use as well. I like to put my beaded necklaces in those. They make some with long compartments that work great.
I always bring way too much jewelry on a cruise and find that I wear the same things, so I bought an reversible omega chain on my last cruise and just bring some slides to use with them.
I like to use clear plastic cosmetic bags for:
hair brushes, shampoo and products
band aids, ointments, Advil, Bromine
contact lenses, solutions
nail polishes, remover pads
Sounds like a lot of little bags, but it makes it easier to put my hands on exactly what I need.

I collect shells and have found a box in the sports dept. of Kamrt. It is for fishing lures and the inside compartment sides can be changed to any size you need. It is also a clear plastic.
