Default Jacket for formal dining

I am going on the Panama Canal Cruise in the New Year and have chosen Princess because of its relatively relaxed nature compared to some of the other cruise lines. As I wear formal business attire every day I look to some relief from formality during my holidays and plan to wear dark slacks with a light blue jacket, matching shirt and tie during the formal dinners. Will I look out of place?

Hi S Jay,
You will most likely have at least 2 formals during that cruise, possibly 3, if you have a dark suit, I'd pack that and just a couple different dress shirts to go with, a different tie or 2 and you should be fine.

When you say dark suit are you talking black suit, or can it be any dark color?

No, doesn't have to be black, any dark color will do.

You will see men dressed in tuxes, dark business suits, and some suit separates on formal nights. Most of the men seem to opt for the dark business suit, its totally up to you as how you might feel wearing a light jacket when 90% of the men around you are in dark suits or tuxes. If you want to go the light colored route - you might want to consider renting a white dinner jacket for the formal nights. Very classy.

What about guyaberas? The embroidered ones considered fancy enough for formal night?

Interesting that you say Princess is a relatively relaxed nature. We went through the Panama Canal on Princess about 3 years and we found it to be just the opposite. I'd say 50-75% of the men wore tuxes and the others were definitely in dark (black) suits. My husband wore his very dark (almost black) suit. Unless things have really changed in the last 3 years. We've never been on a cruise where so many people really dressed to the "nines." Have fun, the Panama Canal was quite an experience.

S Jay - Princess is not considered a casual line, when it comes to the mainstream cruise lines, its one of the dressier ones up there with HAL and Celebrity.
