Default How to pack formal gown

I have run into problems while packing!! How do you ladies pack your formal dresses? Mine is a very "prom" type dress with the layers of meshy kind of fabric underneath the skirt part to make it not lay flat when I wear it. Basically it wont fold up b/c its too "poofy" (ugh that makes it sound hideous!). I hope that makes sense - it really is a beautiful simple dress, it just has some shape in the skirt part.
I dont want to have to bring a garment bag for just this one item, so I was actually thinking about putting it in one of my larger space saver bags. I thought that would protect it and actually keep it in much better shape than any other packing method(other than the garment bag idea, which I am very against).

What do you think about this idea? Is it crazy? Any other ideas?

Thanks so much!

I always pack my dresses in the plastic cleaner bags and then use a garment bag, works very well.

Donna, I am taking two formals and a Tuxedo on an eight day cruise in December - do you use the folding luggage garment bags that packs several garments and accessories or the single garment made from thin plastic used to carry just one?

HI Sirena,
We use a large one that does fold and has wheels. We have the husbands suit/tux and a few of my dresses, all packed in plastic and they travel just fine, no need to iron anything when packed this way.. Although its the last thing that gets packed and the first un-packed when the luggage arrives onboard.

I'd suggest the space saver bag. A regular dry cleaner bag is not going to control the poufyness

It worked brilliantly!
I even put my heavier coat in there ( we are going to the North East and Canada) and squished that down in the bag also. The bag I used is the kind with the vaccum valve on it, but you can very easily roll the air out if you dont have a vaccum handy. I am going to vaccum the air out before I leave and then maybe my steward will let me use his/her vaccum for a second before when I pack to get off the ship

Thanks!
Carey
