Default Towels

This may seem like a silly question but..... Should we bring our own beach towels from home to use at the ports (we plan on going to some beaches) or dot hey have towels on board that we can take off the ship with us? Any advice on shore excursions for the beach and snorkeling in St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

Ships supply you with towels for the beaches. Just don't lose them, they will make you pay for them.

I haven't been yet, but am booked for December. Reading these very informative chats about every subject, I have read that sometimes there are long lines to get the towels before disembarking and it can be expensive if you lose the towels you are lent.

We brought our own. I opened them up and spread them in the bottom of the suitcase, packed the clothes in on top of them and then folded the ends over the top. They really didn't take much room. If you lose the ship's towel they charge you about $25. Mid-week I washed them in the self serve laundry room.

If you don't have self service laundry on the ship, by week's end a towel that hasn't been washed or dried properly, due to less than perfect ventilation in your cabin, is really gross.

You have to stand in the line to get off the ship anyway. That's where you get the towel. There is a fee if you lose it. Don't lose it.

Some people do like there own towels b/c they are easier to spot in a sea (literally) of identical ones.

It's your choice but we leave ours home.

not all cruise lines make you wait in line to get beach towels, on Princess you have fresh beach towels for each person folded and in your cabin once, sometimes twice daily. Just leave the used one on the bathroom floor, your room steward will give you clean one when they clean the room, also if your towel isn't quite dry and you want to go to the pool or whatever, just call your room steward for a fresh towel and leave him/her the damp one.

Right now there are many clearance sales on towels. Not sure how frugal you are..my idea is to buy towels for next July I really don't care if they come back or not.
Yes the ship has towels, but monitoring a $25 towel per person is not my idea of enjoyment. If you can do laundry bring prepackaged laundry soap in shampoo bottles or powder in ziplocs with a few dryer sheets. Also some clothes pins to hang sry towels--they won't blow away if have balcony, and will dry faster if not draped over shower rod.

Thanks for all the tips! I'll have to decide which I want to do, bring or not. Only 23 more days and counting. Going on the Carribbean Princess with husband and 13 year old daughter!

I bought some nice thin beach towels at Target. The ships towels are usually thicker and might be heavier to carry to port beaches. They are usually in your cabin.

You might want to consider bringing your own if you think you might lose the ship's ones or if you are carrying a lot if stuff to the beaches.

Don't forget a beach bag to put everything in. I found I used mine a lot even to go to the pool. A nice lightweight waterproof one is invaluable on any cruise with compartments for lotions etc.

Thanks for the advice all!! This was going to be my question of the day as I pack for the Conquest leaving on Sunday Im taking my own...then getting rid of them before I pack for home. Great idea. Mine are at least 5 years old, maybe more, heh, so they have seen their worth....and I won't have trouble recognizing them in the sea of look alikes

I bought one at Walmart. You can also buy them on the ship. I think I paid about $2 at Walmart and they were about $5 on the ship.

Marian- Check out the web site www.cruisingcaddy.com. They have a product that holds a water bottle and has pockets for your camera, room key, etc. Looks like it would be great for shore excursions. I just ordered three of them and hope to get them before we sail on the Caribbean Princess on October 16th.

Darcy,
I looked at Wal-Mart Super Center and no one even knew what I was talking about! Where in Wal-Mart did you find them? And does anyone know what to call them? Maybe it was my description (a waterproof thingy you wear around your neck) that was the problem! Or maybe they are only available in the summer?
Thanks for your help.

Fern:

They were in the sporting goods section near where they had the snorkels, flippers, etc.. I bought mine in the spring (we live in the Northeast) when all that stuff was out. I'm not sure what they called it. If you can't find one at home they do have them in the gift shop on the ship.

Fern,

I know what you are talking about from that discrtiption. I guess we speak the same language. Try looking in the sporting goods section, where they keep the hunting and camping stuff. They may not have brightly colored ones like you would see at the beach, but I am betting that they have camoflage ones!!

Good luck!

We live in the Midwest (near Chicago) I checked WalMart and could not find any "around the neck thingies" I checked the sporting goods department, luggage department, and jewelry department! All the summer beach wear is gone like flippers,etc.. I guess if I don't find them I'll have to purchase one on the ship.

I had the same problem two weeks ago when the strap on my favorite pair of black sandals broke and I really needed to replace them. Out-of-season stuff is impossible to find in Ohio. I had to wait until I got back to Florida to find sandals for sale. I will go to a marine supplies shop to buy snorkeling gear.

Back to towels... I'll use those on board the ship rather than try to keep enough clean ones on hand for both of us.
