military uniform for formal night?

Hi!
Looking for advice regarding my husband wearing his formal Air Force Mess dress uniform for the formal nights. On our last cruise he rented a tuxedo, and I'm wondering whether we should do this again or if his uniform would be acceptable. I don't remember seeing any military uniforms on our Princess cruise last April.
Thanks for any advice!

Hi Sunny Girl,
Yes, the uniform will be perfectly acceptable and in good taste. Go ahead and pack it!

Re: military uniform for formal night?

Just my opinion, but I think the dress uniform would be very cool!

I know that he wouldn't be turned away because the uniform attire is formal enough. It's just a question of whether or not you want to stand out and how comfortable he would feel if there were no other military uniforms about.

Personally, I would scrap the dull black-and-white complacency and go for it!

Tell him to wear the uniform!! There were several gentlemen on our last cruise who wore thiers and they looked great!

Re: military uniform for formal night?

Absolutely have your husband wear the Uniform. My late father was in the Army Air Corps and later the Air Force and married my mom dressed in his Air Force Dress Uniform. I think there is nothing more handsome than a man in his Dress Uniform. You should be proud if you do stand out, which I don't think will be the case. If anything he will stand out as one of our brave. Have a wonderful cruise!

I hope you will have your photos taken with him in his uniform and you in your formal gown. You will both be the hit of the ship on formal night.

God bless you both and I hope everyone who sees you will say "thank you" for serving us well.

Yes - definately the uniform - I would be proud of him and I'm Canadian, lol. There is nothing so handsome as a man in uniform. But you might need a big stick to beat off the babes - have a great trip and enjoy yourselves. -- ttfn Jennifer

My nephew wore his dress uniform last year on our family cruise and was the hit of the boat. Many passengers thanked him for his service and the picture people on formal night did extra special for him and his bride.

Additional question on this topic:

We'll be on the Grandeur 1-15, and are contemplating the hubby wearing his AF Mess Dress. However, he feels somewhat ambivalent about wearing it, as he has frequently been advised to not draw attention to being military due to security issues. Any thoughts on this?

Re: military uniform for formal night?

I posted this a while back, in a post about 30 below this one

"I am ex UK military, and even though I can no longer wear dress uniform (I've got one but it shrunk) !!<g>

I love to wear my dress blazer with the Royal Artillery regimental badge on the breast pocket on semi formal nights. It makes me feel proud of what I did to earn it and is a great conversational piece with others

Military people go for it if you have the chance,,,,,we dont get to wear it for nothing. Jerks forget them, the rest of us know and appreciate"

But to the question abbzsterz. I would play it on depending where in the world you are sailing. But having said that no matter the ports visited, he's not going to be wearing it ashore...only on the ship with like minded people..So I do not see a problem.

Go for it, as I said above,,we earned the right and that right should not be hidden or forgotten. Have a geat cruise

I am glad I saw you ask the question, I had the same question for my brother, I think that it would be very good taste as well as it would show our countries pride.

I am active duty Air Force and have proudly wore my mess dress on our last two cruises. I will once again wear it on our 29 Jan 05 Caribbean Princess sailing. I have always received a lot of gratitude and praise from the other cruisers on our military's sacrifice to this wonderful nation. Wear the uniform with pride!

I know this post is probably after your cruise, but I hope all in the Military would wear their uniforms. I am able to write this post and go on a cruise because of those that have served our country.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all in the military and their families!

I am glad I found this thread. My wife and I are cruising on the Carnival Conquest on 21 August, and I have been debating on taking my mess dress along for the formal nights. I guess I will be!

Yes!!! from the proud mother of 3 active US Marines!! We always make an effort to go and meet anyone in uniform and say THANK YOU! We were at Outback the other night and a table of 5 marines, not in uniform, came in for dinner. We finished dinner, went over and shook hands, thanked them and bought them a round of drinks.

Thanks for all the input......... My husband did wear his AF mess dress on our last cruise, as a result of everyones recommendation, and didn't feel the least bit uncomfortable. He looked terribly handsome and I was gushing with pride, as usual. On our next cruise, over Thanksgiving, he will be wearing it again on formal nights. It's really nice to have complete strangers come up and thank us for our sacrafices. And, it just reminds us what it's all about. Thanks!

Re: military uniform for formal night?

I've seen many dress uniforms in the dining room. If you've got one, wear it. It's the only way to go. Do you stand out? A little, in a good way. The dark military dress uniforms blend in well. The white navy suits look great too, but you might have a few people ask you for directions to the lifeboats thinking you're one of the ship's officers.

You single military guys who wear your dress uniforms have it made on a cruise. All the young single women on the ship will keep your dance card full.

Uniform for all formal nights?

It's interesting...there wasn't a single "no, don't wear it" in this thread.

Would a man wear his uniform to all of the formal nights for a cruise? Is it ok for a woman to wear the same outfit a couple of times?

Seems like so many different things to pack!

Sandy
