My grandparents, parents and I are going on a cruise to Alaska on July 1. My grandparents (grandmother, especially) are in their 70s; my grandfather has a dark suit, of course, but my grandmother is somewhat worried about how cold it will be on the ship on formal nights. For this reason, dresses are less of an option for her....
I know she has at least one formal jacket/skirt ensemble. Would tasteful and beautifully made pantsuits or blouse/jacket/skirt sets be acceptable for my grandmother for informal and formal nights?
A silky blouse w/ an accessory (maybe a broach or scarf) and a skirt would look very nice for formal night, as would a pantsuit.
If she wants something new, you can try any stores that sell mother of the bride ensembles, they're very appropriate . For our cruise later this month, my grandmother is going with two long dresses with shawls over them, she found that was a good alternative to wearing a blouse and skirt. Perhaps your grandmother can consider that as well...
And she's right to wonder about the temperature. I have always found the dining rooms and show lounges to be absolutely POLAR!! :0

She can wear whatever she is comfortable in - but a shawl or sweater for over the shoulders is a must both in the dining rooms and the showrooms. Have a great time - ttfn Jennifer
I agree with Dorothy cruise ships are definitely on the chilly side. I would either make sure she is in long sleeves or take a shawl or sweater in the evenings. I am always cold in short sleeves or sleeveless attire. I would not worry too much about what your grandmother wears just make sure she is comfortable and having a great time. Pantsuits are definitely acceptable.

the formal jacket/skirt/blouse ensemble would be perfect. IF she want to add a bit of punch to that outfit, get a blouse with a bit of sparkle. An elegant pantsuit with a silk or sparkly blouse would be perfect for formal nights.
Women can wear pants anywhere they want now a days. What makes them formal is the fabric. A pair of loose crepe or silk pants with a beaded top would be fine.
