Default can i use TSA approved locks?

does anyone know if Carnival deals with the TSA approved locks? i bought them for regular travel because they can be opened by any airport personnel and you don't have to worry about them cutting your other locks off. does carnival have "keys" to get into the TSA locks in case they need to search bags for the cruise? i'd really rather not tie my zippers together with string or rubber bands or pipe cleaners, which anyone can cut apart with a pair of scissors.

Actually, the cruiseline will not open luggage like the TSA can and does at the airport, so you can keep your luggage locked, with any kind of locks, not a problem.

Hi chosen175,

What Donna said! If there's something they want to see they'll ask you to open your luggage.

Chosen 175
I have the TSA locks also and never had a problem ( knock on wood )
one guy in 2004 ( security) did a double take and said," those locks make my job easier", noting that airport security checked mine....

At the end of a cruise, our luggage is picked up and "stored" overnight on the ship. Crew members have plenty of access and time to "go thru" all of those bags. The TSA locks can sure put a dent in that activity. They would have to cut into the bag itself to get in. Of course, I suppose we must consider if those TSA lock keys are available on a blackmarket basis... . I'm still using the TSA locks.

I've been cruising for 25 years and I never heard of crew members rifling through the luggage. We use TSA locks, but not to protect our bags from the crew!

Dear Chosen:
In all my years of cruising I have never had or known anyone else who ever had the experience of the ship's crew invading the luggage bags. All crew members are background checked through worldwide databases and fingerprints are on file. They will not hire anyone from any of the many countries these employees come from. Also, the crew stays on these ships 6 or months out of the year - if they screw up in any way they are dismissed at the next docking port and left to their own devices to find their way home with little more than "chump change" in their pockets. Their shipboard earnings are credited to a holding account and only released to be wired home to their families at specific times. Aside from some trinkets & t-shirt souveniers no one should ever pack anything except their dirty or clean clothing, shoes and such. Any expensive items purchased duty-free (electronics, cameras, etc) should be bought with a reliable credit card (MC.Visa.AMEX...)so that if it is missing when you get home, you can have the card company put a claim in with the cruise line and hold payment on the purchase until the issue is resolved. Most purchases are not posted to your account for payment within 10-15 days although they may appear in your account summary prior to next bill cycle. The card companies will investigate losses if you can produce the original sales receipt - so always keep an envelope in your carry-on bag stuffed with all your receipt info. Tip: if you carry a small memo book with you to record special memories of the trip, you might also think about logging the things you bought and where and it's value in the back pages - free your memory for the fun details!

Also, re: locking luggage inexpensively.....you can go to any store like Target, K-mart, CVS, discount outlets and buy cheap but effective luggage lock sets (usually 2 per pack with keys) for anywhere from $2.99 and up. If you choose the small combination locks, you set the codes and never worry about carrying the keys or losing them. I hope this boring, long dissertation has helped to ease your mind.....concentrate on all the really cool & fantastic times ahead....enjoy your cruise and leave your worries behind!!! ()

This is something I've done every night on all of our cruises. It makes filling out the customs form at the end of the cruise so much easier! For small souvenirs I just add them all up and write "souvenirs" and an amount. If we buy jewelry or electronics we list them separately.
