Default Overdressed??

i have a beautiful navy gown - its figure hugging, halter style, criss-cross straps in the back, low cut back, side slit with subtle crystals, would i be overdressed for formal night on RCCL Freedom of the Seas? this will be our first RCCL cruise.

Sounds perfect to me - however, the dining rooms tend to be a little on the cool side, so you might want to have some sort of wrap just in case. The gift shops normally sell faux "pashminas" in a variety of colors for $10.

Lisa:

In my opinion, you really can't be overdressed for formal night. I happen to dress formal every night of my cruise because after 35 cruises I have a lot of formal dresses (most of the long) and when I'm home, there is really no place where I can wear them. I usually get one or two new ones before each cruise, so you can imagine how many I have. Of course, I've gained some weight since my first cruise over 20 years ago, and then some of them go out of style so I tell my husband that it's just another cost of cruising to replace some of them. I actually have as much fun buying formal dresses as I do wearing them. I do get some strange looks on the ships when it's not formal night because I do dress up every night, but I figure that's better than not dressing up at all. Besides I'm not dressing for other people, just myself and my husband.

I think you will look just right in the dress you described.

Happy Cruising....Anita/Buddy

Hi LisaK,

The dress you described sounds beautiful and perfect for any formal night!

I'm just curious as to why the "maven of dressing and packing" would even be asking this question !

You've given all of us such wonderful answers about how to dress on a cruise!

Have a wonderful cruise!

The main reason i asked was because we have only sailed on Princess, and i know that RCCL is a bit more laid-back and casual than Princess and the group that we are sailing with are very casual folks and ......

On my Mariner of the seas cruise in Oct. people for the most dressed for formal nite at dinner - I did see a few in the jeans and tee shirts. But after dinner everyone it seemed changed into shorts for the shows. The entertainer at the show actually made a joke about it.

I just took a cruise on Celebrity Zenith last week. It was a completely differant atmosphere from MOS. I loved the fact that people dressed up much nicer and stayed dressed for the most part. I also loved there were no huge congested crowds like I saw on Mariner of the Seas and also the fact that the food was much better on the Zenith.

I decided no more mega ships for me. Cruising just plains loses it's ambiance. I willl never go on that Freedom ship or that other even newer larger ship that comes out in a few years.

Wear your beautiful gown and don't worry about it-what the others do-you will be the best dressed gal on the ship and others who choose not to dress will be looking at you in jealousy in their "comfortable" dressed down clothes.

I will be willing to bet too-unless you want to "surf on a ship" your next cruise will either be back with Princess or a line like it.

Hi Lisa,
I agree with the others, dress sounds perfect and as long as you are comfortable with it, go for it. I'd also pack a shawl or a light sweater in case its chilly in the dining room or theater for after dinner.
