Default Gym wear on ship

We cruised Celebrity in January and once again, got uncomfortable stares from people as to our attire. We use the gym every day and always take the late seating for dinner. The time of day in the gym depends on programming, whether in port etc. Therefore, on formal nights when many are all dolled up for early seating, we are coming down stairways or hallways in our sweaty (but cute :) workout gear. We don't use the elevators, so we are not in that close proximity to those already dressed. I recall that on formal nights, formal atire is expected in certain areas. Enlighten me please.

kd you are correct, on formal nights, formal attire is expected for the entire evening , especially on a more traditional line like Celebrity.
I would not be concerned one bit about "the looks" you get returning from the gym to your cabin in workout gear. Its not like you are going to go to dinner in your workout gear.
Those folks are just being petty and nosey.

We saw a lot of people in casual clothes on formal night on the Lido deck and I figure if people weren't dressed up on those nights they had either already changed or chose to eat at the buffet. It was no biggy.

kd,

We cruised Celebrity in January and once again, got uncomfortable stares from people as to our attire. We use the gym every day and always take the late seating for dinner. The time of day in the gym depends on programming, whether in port etc. Therefore, on formal nights when many are all dolled up for early seating, we are coming down stairways or hallways in our sweaty (but cute workout gear. We don't use the elevators, so we are not in that close proximity to those already dressed. I recall that on formal nights, formal atire is expected in certain areas. Enlighten me please.

The stated policy on most cruise lines is that the prescribed evening attire is expected throughout the ship, excepting designated casual dining and recreation areas (which would include the gym and the pool while they are open), after 6:00 PM, though enforcement of this policy varies widely from one cruise line to another. It's also important to remember that Celebrity is probably the most upscale of the major cruise lines and thus that most of its passengers expect other passengers to comply with this policy. The stares at those who don't comply may well reflect disbelief rather than ire.

Fundamentally, there's no problem in returning to your cabin to shower after your work-out even if it is in the evening time slot. Nonetheless, the reality is that some stairways pass through lobby areas located right at the entrances to showrooms or dining rooms and thus serve as gathering areas for passengers awaiting admission to the corresponding events. The best way to avoid stares when returning to your cabin after a work-out may well be to book a cabin that's located above the promenades so that you won't have to pass though the lobby areas where pasengers may be gathering in order to return to your room.

Happy cruising!

Norm.
