spunky,

On a lot of cruise ships, you need your credit card to lock the safe.

What???

Which lines are you cruising???

In twenty cruises (thirteen Princess & seven Celebrity), I have never been on a ship that required a credit card to lock or unlock the cabin safe. On nineteen of my cruises, the ship had modern combinaiton safes with a keypad on which you either enter a code to lock it and reenter the same code to unlock it or set a combination with the safe unlocked that would unlock the safe thereafter somebody set a different combinaiton. The safes aboard the original MV Royal Princess (entered service in 1984), which had keys, were the only exception.

Norm.

Alot of the cruise lines do have safes where a card with a magnetic stripe is required to access the safe. A Credit Card is NOT necessary, and in fact I wouldn't recommend using one. In those cases we use our Costco card or something similar.

Don't use your credit card -use any card with a magnetic strip-(grocery discout card, BJ's discount card, Cosco discount card etc) Some safes offer both ways, either key pad or magnetic strip, the Golden Princess was like that.

I bring along a white board marker.. works well to leave notes on the mirrors if you need anything from your room stewards.

Default sticky notes

Small pad of sticky notes, great for leaving reminders on door, note to cabin steward, etc. High-lighter pen for daily schedule or tours. small spray bottle of Downy Wrinkle Release, this stuff is amazing, just lay clothing flat on bed, few sprays, smooth with hands and hang up. I also bring my personal cards and add cabin number, great for passing out to new friends.
Already mentioned: power strip, small flash light and night light, clothes pins, and ribbons or pom poms for luggage handles

I have found that I need two power strips because I need to keep phones charged, camera batteries charged, computers charged.

Really and honestly you would actually do that, write on a mirror in your cabin to leave your steward a message!!! Not only do you feel you cannot talk to them for some reason, you also feel its within your right to give them even more work to do by cleaning your sht nessage off the mirror! What kind of person are you?, I am gobsmacked
