My question is my Fiancee and I taking our 4 kids ages 11,12,15 & 16 us dressing up is no problem but what is expected of the kids to wear? Suits? Dresses? Skirts? Also we are taking a 5 night Royal Caribbean cruise how many formal nights will there be, we are rather a casual family.

depends on the kids but I've seen kids.. your age kids in long dresses and suits. Non-formal nights the girls can wear sundress and the boys can wear slacks and a nice shirt. Formal nights are a bit more dressy. If they don't feel like dressing up at all, the buffet is always open. they can wear what they want (no swimsuits).

If the cruise line intends a different dress standard for children, youth, and teens, the onus is on the cruise line to publish it. If the cruise line does not publish a different dress code for children, youth, and teens, they follow the same standards of dress as adults. On most cruise lines, that means either "black tie" (tuxedo or dinner jacket outfit) or a dark suit for boys and a nice 'party dress" or prom dress for girls for the "formal" evenings.
I don't recommend buying suits for boys unless either they will have other occasions to wear them after the cruise or you get a very good deal on a sale someplace. Nearly all tuxedo shops rent tuxedo in boys' sizes, as ringbearers and "junior ushers" at weddings generate considerable demand.
Stacy, the formal night dress code applies to everyone, kids included. For the boys if they have a suit then pack that, if not then you might want to hunt around at thrift and consignment shops for a suit or for suit separates. Renting a tux is a great idea especially for growing teens, if you spend the money on a suit, chances are they will only get to wear it once and then hand it down if they can. The girls will be just fine in a nice party dress.
