I always check as much luggage as possible to avoid lugging more than necessary through airports, especially if I have a connection at a major hub where I may need to go some distance. Remember that the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) now limits carry-on to one fairly small piece (a 22" roller back suitcase is about the limit) plus one "personal item" (typically a handbag, a computer bag, a briefcase, or a small backpack) per passenger. The security procedures instituted after the "9/11" attack requires the airlines to track luggage and to match luggage with passengers, so there's a lot less problem with missing luggage now than a decade ago.
Actually, you can pack the dress and the suit in a suitcase so you won't need to haul the garment bag.
