Default Socks-for a tux

What kind of socks with a Tux- aren't they really thin- almost like stockings?
I plan to rent a tux for my husband on ship- & I know that they will provide a pair of socks- for another 6 bucks . . . but should I wash them? or buy another pair or just bring some from home? All of his dark socks are rather thick cotton.

And I am considering renting my formal stuff as well-
I never knew it was possible before!

The socks worn with a tuxedo really don't show, so it does not matter what kind they are so long as they are black. If your husband does not have black socks, buy a three-pack of whatever type he prefers at Wal*Mart and be done with it.

Norm.

I would definately take the black socks myself. DH usually takes a thin pair (not the sheer ones) when he rents the tux and shoes. He says the shoes seem to fit better if he is not wearing thick socks. He forgot to pack his dress socks once and had to wear my black knee hi stockings with his suit pants to dinner. You really couldn't tell unless he crossed his foot over his knee!

On the same trip, we were rushing to get all the luggage out in the hallway by midnight. I accidentally packed his casual shoes and kept out shorts and a golf shirt with his black wing-tip shoes. He had to wear this outfit around the ship the next morning and couldn't change until we left the ship and got our luggage back. I still have a picture of him in that outfit on my desk.

I totally agree with Norm go to walmart and buy some inexpensive black dress socks, get some with a textured pattern just because you can, lol

I disagree. Socks DO show. Maybe not while walking, but while seated, and certainly with legs crossed, they do.

I'm surprised to think that someone would consider renting a tuxedo and wearing the wrong socks (the thought of the cheap ones from Wal-Mart is amusing). People, hello, just go to the men’s furnishings department at Sears, Penney’s, Macys, Neiman’s, or whatever MAJOR department store you have, tell the salesperson that you need TWO (yes, two, unless you plan on washing them) pair of black socks, appropriate to wear with a tuxedo. It will cost about the same as the rental, and not really more than the ones from Wal-Mart.

For whatever worth, these are the same socks that a gentleman should be wearing with dress clothes or a suit. In other words, the cheap ones are not only inappropriate for the cruise, but for dress wear as well.

If you don’t like the way they feel, then try on a pair of ladies heels for about five minutes—you’ll never complain again!

I found two (yes two) pairs of proper socks at Dillards.

Why rent when you can buy! Penny's has tuxedos for (if I recall correctly) $129, plus the "puffy shift/tie/cumberbund/studs" combo for $30.

I always wear white cotton socks.

Maruccio i have to disagree with you about buying dress socks at Wal-Mart. I have bought my DH a few pairs of very nice good quality, not cheapo paper thin ones. He wouldn't wear them if he didn't like them, they wear well, wash well and he has some with texture and subtle patterns that he really likes.

I have actually tried to get my DH to purchase a tux, but he doesn't wear one that often and if his weight fluctuates, he would have to have it altered. We also like reserving one on the ship, because it cuts down on our luggage, particularly if we are flying in to the cruise port.
