Default Formal Shorts?

Good morning. I've enjoyed these boards for weeks now.

For my first post, I thought I'd table a crucial issue: Are ladies' formal shorts (tailored, knee-length, dressy fabric, suitably somber hue) passable?

Thanks. You might unwittingly save a marriage with your replies. Happy week!

Passable for what occasion?

>> They would be very appropriate for wear during the daytime aboard ship.

>> They would be very appropriate for shore excursions and sightseeing, except when visiting houses of worship on European and Mediterranean cruises.

>> On most cruise lines, they would not be appropriate evening attire.

So by all means, bring them to wear during the day!

Norm.

Sorry; should've specified that this is planned with a dressy blouse for formal night. I bought it on a whim and thought I could justify it somehow. [Bound to give me more mileage than a formal skirt just for the cruise]

But you may have sounded the knell for my idea, Norm. I've read your other posts and agreed with your take on many. I'll just nix the plan.

CruiseNOID, thanks lots anyhow. Good day, all.

A lot depends on the cruise line. You could definitely wear them on NCL, and possibly even Carnival. Most other lines, not.
Hope you can find a justification for them. Don't you just hate unjustified shorts?

Thanks, Marty. Pretend I knew how to tack on these yellow faces; which one would best say: 'I think this thread may have saved me from a baaaaad idea...'

Salut-

How about the blushing one!
Have fun on your cruise and don't worry too much about what other people might think. Following reasonable social guidelines is one thing, but no need to overdo it.

Well, don't scrap the blouse. Rather, get a nice formal skirt (velvet, silk, or satin, for example) and a ladies' evening jacket to wear with it on your "formal" evenings. The Navy's "Dinner Dress White Jacket" uniform for female officers is a good illustration of the style. That look is very classic!

jetwash that is a really, really good question, do you have a pictue? that would really help, my best guess would be to pair up your dressy blouse with a dressy skirt or a dressy dinner suit(either skirt or pants)

Norm and Lisa, the blouse WILL make it with a nice skirt. Gowns and dressy dresses look great, but I'm just too phobic about stepping out in them. Thanks again.

But this you likely already knew: as THE day creeps closer for this first-ever cruise, I'm now just giddy.

Much weekend bliss, all.

unjustified shorts are almost as bad as unjustified shoes!

Are shoes (or purses) ever really unjustified?

I say no, but I bet my dh would beg to differ.

Yep, there does seem to be a gender bias on these. I tend to find a purse that I love, then use it constantly until it looks terrible and/or I fall in love witht another one. And DH still teases me about buying too many purses. Shoes are not much of an issue any more. Age does tend to make you lean towards max comfort. But, I do miss those fun, sexy heels and DH now regrets every snide comment he ever made about my buying and wearing them.

"formal shorts"? Is this anything like an informal tuxedo.

Buy a dress and get with the program!
