The specify closed toe shoes (ie running shoes or sneakers) because you might be walking thru a lot of mud or debris that can hurt .This basically
for your protection not to get hurt.
I've been on tours that specified closed toe shoes. People still worn sandals
and their feet were filthy after and some where badly cut.
